MLS 2017 – Philadelphia Union vs New York Red Bulls Betting Preview

The MLS weekend concludes with just the one match on Sunday as the Philadelphia Union host the New York Red Bulls in an Eastern Conference match up. Matches on Saturday have seen these two drop to tenth and seventh respectively in the table but both have the chance to move up with a win.

The match is live on Sky Sports in the UK which makes it more attractive and given neither are where they want to be in the table we should be assured of a strong match.

Philadelphia Union

If we go back a month or so then Philadelphia Union looked a shambles. They looked the worst side in the conference and the table showed that but they have found some form in recent weeks and now they look like a team who could yet sneak into the play-offs if they can sustain some momentum and consistency.

The Union went on a four match winning streak which got them among the pack but they have lost their last two so they need to find three points again here. In fairness those two defeats were both on the road and at tricky places to go. They have won their last three at home so a return to their own surroundings should boost them.

New York Red Bulls

After a couple of seasons of dominating the regular season it has been a tough time of it so far for the New York Red Bulls. They haven’t been able to get anything going in this campaign and while I had no doubt Dax McCarty would be a big loss for them I wasn’t expecting them to struggle this much since his departure.

The Red Bulls go into this match off the back of a rough trot which has seen them win just once in their last six matches and even that was a fortunate one against the New England Revolution. On the road they are terrible. They’ve not won away since the opening day in Atlanta and they were second best in that game. They have lost their last six on the road.

Team News

Alejandro Bedoya is rated as questionable for the home side in this match. It would be a blow if he isn’t fit to play. Maurice Edu and Brian Carroll are among those definitely out.

The Red Bulls have no new injury concerns to worry about so they can pick what should be a settled side although with their current form changes certainly can’t be ruled out.

Betting

We have one of my favourite battles in MLS here. A side in good home form against a side in terrible away form and while I don’t think the Philadelphia Union are that much as a side they clearly get inspiration by their home stadium.

I’ve thought the Red Bulls were in a bad way for a while now and away from home they have looked a shambles this season and there are no signs that it is going to change any time soon. While I’m not Philadelphia’s biggest fan I do like them here especially with a bit of draw cover.
