What has been dubbed ‘Rivalry Week’ in the MLS continues on Friday night with two appealing looking matches with both Conferences very much under focus on what should be a hugely entertaining evening.

The first match will see us heading for the streams but the second one, which is potentially the pick of the two matches, is live on TV for those of us in the UK albeit it is on late into the night, or early in the morning depending on which way you look at things!

Orlando City vs Atlanta United

The first match as ever comes from the Eastern Conference where bottom of the pile Orlando City host the leaders Atlanta United. After seeing the two New York clubs draw on Wednesday evening a victory here would take Atlanta five points clear in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.

I think it is fair to say that Orlando City are drinking at the last chance saloon now. They have drifted 10pts away from the play-off places although they do have a couple of games in hand but after picking up just four points from their last 45 they will need to go on an crazy run. Atlanta have won four of their last six so they are in good touch.

The general trend of Orlando City matches is that they are high scoring and with the best attacking unit in MLS coming to town I’m not expecting that one to change. Orlando have to win football matches and to do that they need to commit men forward and take risks. Atlanta are just the side to take advantage of that so expect the goals to flow here.

LA Galaxy vs Los Angeles FC

The third Los Angeles derby is the second match of the night when LA Galaxy host their city rivals Los Angeles FC at the Stubhub Center in a match which is critical for both sides in the overall Western Conference picture.

The Galaxy have hit the skids big time with no win in four matches and they have just been battered 5-0 in Seattle and with the Sounders charging suddenly Zlatan and his teammates are looking over their shoulders to keep their play-off spot. Back-to-back wins have come at the right time for LAFC and they are looking up rather than down.

The first two derbies have ended 4-3 and 2-2 and I’m expecting a barrel load more goals here. Galaxy suddenly can’t keep them out having shipped 14 times in their last five matches while it wasn’t too long ago that Minnesota United of all teams put five past LAFC. That trend of goals in this fixture will continue here barring something extreme.
