MLS 2018 – Saturday 31st March Matches Betting Preview

The remainder of this weekend’s matches in the MLS take place on a really busy card on Saturday evening with the highlight being the potential debut in the league of one Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It is a star studded night in the division with lots to enjoy.

We have a couple of matches on TV which includes the first ever Los Angeles derby but the support cast is the highest quality too. Those fixtures which are not on TV are streamed with the majority of the bookmakers so there are plenty of ways of keeping up with the games.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off time in brackets)

Orlando City vs New York Red Bulls (18.00)

Columbus Crew vs Vancouver Whitecaps (20.00)

Los Angeles Galaxy vs Los Angeles FC (20.00)

Chicago Fire vs Portland Timbers (23.00)

Minnesota United vs Atlanta United (01.00)

San Jose Earthquakes vs New York City FC (01.00)

Houston Dynamo vs New England Revolution (01.30)

Sporting Kansas City vs DC United (01.30)

Colorado Rapids vs Philadelphia Union (02.00)

Seattle Sounders vs Montreal Impact (03.00)

Big Matches

All eyes will be on the Stubhub Center where Zlatan could begin his MLS career when Los Angeles Galaxy take on Los Angeles FC in the big derby. That is one of the two matches that are live on TV in the UK with the other one being the match between Chicago Fire and Portland Timbers in which both sides need a victory.

Best of the Rest

Two sides who have made good starts to the season meet in Ohio when the Columbus Crew and the Vancouver Whitecaps do battle. Sporting Kansas City currently lead the Western Conference and they will look to remain top of the pile when they host DC United. Two other sides with two wins on the campaign are Minnesota United and Atlanta United and they do battle in a repeat of the snow game from last year. New York Red Bulls head to Orlando City where they will encounter their former player Sacha Kljestan.

Betting

I don’t normally load up on MLS bets but then there aren’t normally 10 matches in the one night so I’m going to allow myself the chance to do so. In all I’m going with four bets which begin with the big derby.

All the talk in MLS has been about the signing of Los Angeles Galaxy but their city rivals Los Angeles FC can show them that the league is no longer a retirement home. LAFC have signed young, vibrant and dynamic talent which is everything the Galaxy are lacking and while Zlatan might sell shirts I’m not convinced he’ll win many matches. I would imagine there will be a few goals in this one but LAFC can get the better share of them.

When Atlanta United went to Minnesota last year they came away with a 6-1 victory and while I don’t expect anything quite so emphatic here I do think we are going to get goals between two sides who have already had their defensive frailties exposed this season. We all know about Atlanta and their goalscoring expertise but Minnesota United are not too shabby going forward so over three goals looks an obvious play here.

Sporting Kansas City have really impressed this season with their new attacking style very much pleasing on the eye and I expect them to dominate their match against DC United. The likes of Felipe Gutierrez, Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi are impressing to the extent that Benny Feilhaber has barely been missed. DC United have struggled this season so far and I expect those struggles to continue both here and for the longer term.

Houston Dynamo are an excellent side on their own patch and I expect to see that again on Saturday evening when they host the New England Revolution. To be fair to the Revolution they have looked a much improved side under Brad Friedel although I don’t think that is much of a surprise. I’m expecting both sides to play on the front foot in this one with the goals to flow as a result.
