The MLS weekend concludes with a couple of matches on Sunday evening with four standout sides in action on what should be a cracking night of football from America’s top league. There are stars everywhere we look and with both matches on TV in the UK there is no reason not to enjoy it all.
Sporting Kansas City vs Seattle Sounders
For once we get underway with the Western Conference match up as the high flying Sporting Kansas City side take on the beaten MLS Cup finalists of last season in Seattle Sounders. This is a big match for both sides but for different reasons.
Sporting Kansas City can open up a six point lead in the Conference table should they win this match while Seattle Sounders are desperate to get their season up and running. So far they have lost all three matches and worse still, they remain without a goal from those outings which is a major concern.
SKC have shown the right mix this season. They have definitely added more firepower to their ranks with Johnny Russell and Felipe Gutierrez impressing but when they have needed to show the steel they are famous for at the back they have done so.
Seattle have been very ordinary this term. They barely landed a blow on LAFC in their opening match then took a pounding in Dallas and lost to Montreal last time out. Injuries to key men are not helping them neither is the suspension to Clint Dempsey. The Sounders look like a struggling side at the minute and I expect Sporting Kansas City to take advantage of that.
Atlanta United vs New York City FC
The match of the weekend comes in the final match of it when the top two in the Eastern Conference collide as Atlanta United take on New York City FC. The visitors could open up a seven point gap at the top of the table if they win this match but few roll into the Mercedes-Benz Stadium and have it easy.
Atlanta United lost their opening match of the season in emphatic style in Houston but 12 goals in three home matches since then suggests they have found their feet now. New York City have only dropped two points all season and handed out a walloping to Real Salt Lake in midweek. David Villa is expected to return here too.
I expect to see goals here. Atlanta United play on the front foot and are dynamite at home and can destroy anyone there but New York City FC have the players to get at them on the break. Both meetings between the two last year ended 3-1 to the home side and I’m expecting four or more goals here.
