Big Matches

In the Western Conference the equation is perfectly simple in terms of the final play-off spot. If LA Galaxy avoid losing to the Houston Dynamo in the TV game in the UK then they will be in. If not then it is Real Salt Lake whose season will remain alive. In the Eastern Conference Columbus Crew host Minnesota United knowing that if they win they are in. Failure to win opens the door to the Montreal Impact who will finish sixth if they beat New England Revolution.

Best of the Rest

In the battle for the Supporters’ Shield, Atlanta United are in pole position. They will win the Shield if they beat Toronto FC or if they match New York Red Bulls’ result. The Red Bulls have to better Atlanta’s result to win it. The top two in the Western Conference meet to determine the number one seed. Sporting Kansas City host Los Angeles FC knowing if they avoid defeat they will top the table. If they lose LAFC will do so in their first season in the league. DC United head to Chicago Fire knowing if they win they will be at home in the first round of the postseason in midweek.

Betting

This is a tough card to bet on because nearly every team who need something on the evening are hugely short and having to cover massive handicaps where in truth you wouldn’t want to oppose them but at the same time their need is only to win rather than run up cricket scores, especially those who know they will be in action in midweek if they get into the postseason. Given all that I’ll round off the regular season with just one bet.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the Seattle Sounders dodge the first round of the play-offs but in order to do that they must beat the San Jose Earthquakes and hope both LAFC and FC Dallas fail to win their matches. With that in mind I’m expecting the Sounders to explode out of the gates and look to get in front and get the nerves into the other two teams. San Jose have no reason in not having a go and playing the role of the spoiler so this should be a decent game. A 3.25 goal line is respectable enough given the situation so I’m happy to take the over there.
