MLS 2018 – Toronto FC vs Orlando City Betting Preview

Another weekend in the MLS begins on Friday night and it does so across the border in Canada as the defending champions Toronto FC host Orlando City in a big clash in the Eastern Conference.

Both sides go into the match off the back of defeats last weekend so they will both be eager to steal a march on the other teams in the Conference by getting three points under their belts before the rest of them play.

Toronto FC

The champions have really struggled to get going this season and we are far enough past the end of North American Champions League for that competition to no longer be an excuse for their poor beginning to the campaign. They do have a lot of injuries which is still an issue but despite that they should be doing much better than they are.

The big concern for Greg Vanney and his coaching staff will be the number of goals the side are conceding. We are used to the Toronto back line being tight and allowing their forward players the freedom to express themselves without needing to score three and four to win every match. That hasn’t been the case this season.

Orlando City

After a wobbly start to the season, Orlando City have blasted into life and although a run of six successive victories was ended by Atlanta United at the weekend they remain one of the form sides in the competition. Although they are away here and have to travel a fair distance they will be going to Canada aiming to find the winning touch again.

The catalyst to their upturn in form does not need a huge amount of searching. It is the return from injury of Dom Dwyer. He hasn’t always scored when he has played this season but he brings a potency to their attacking player and you can tell that he scares defenders with his presence. That goal threat makes Orlando dangerous.

Team News

Toronto FC will be without the suspended Sebastian Giovinco after his red card in the defeat in New England last weekend. Jozy Altidore is out through injury as are Drew Moor, Nick Hagglund and Justin Morrow.

Orlando City will be without one of their playmakers in Yoshi Yotun while Jonathan Spector is out with injury. More significantly Dom Dwyer is rated questionable with a lower body issue.

Betting

When Sebastian Giovinco was sent off last week my intention was to back Orlando City in this match but the doubts over whether Dom Dwyer will feature or not is not appealing. If we look back to the beginning of the season when Dwyer was injured Orlando were terrible and that is a worry.

I can’t be backing Toronto FC with all the players they have missing in this match so while the game looked an appealing one on paper when you strip it back and look deeper the best way to play this match is not to bet on it.
