MLS 2019 – Sporting Kansas City vs New York Red Bulls Betting Preview

The final match of what has been a high scoring and extremely entertaining weekend in Major League Soccer takes place on Sunday evening, when the Sporting Kansas City host New York Red Bulls in a real top showdown.

It is fair to say that neither side have had the emphatic starts to the season that would have been expected of them heading into it, but a couple of quick wins in a row would soon have their prospects looking much better.

Sporting Kansas City

After a last gasp defeat to the Los Angeles FC in their first match, Sporting Kansas City have been unbeaten in the four since then and that should not be underestimated or discounted because they have been juggling their MLS campaign with their NACL showing, which we’ve seen many sides struggle to do. Ultimately though, they came up against one too good in the NACL so they can now focus fully on the MLS.

Kansas City have only played two home matches in MLS this season and they have won them both pretty comfortably. They beat Philadelphia Union 2-0 and then walloped Montreal Impact 7-1 and the Impact haven’t conceded goal in three matches since then so that is decent form for sure. A third straight home win here will move them up to fifth in the West and in good shape.

New York Red Bulls

After a good draw at the Columbus Crew and a dominant win over the San Jose Earthquakes, it looked like being yet another excellent regular season campaign at the Red Bull Arena. I don’t think anyone saw three successive defeats coming along to follow and the worrying thing is that apart from 20 minutes against Minnesota United last time out, when 2-0 down at the time, they have looked quite ordinary in that period too.

We are used to the Red Bulls being this high scoring powerful machine but that is not the case this term so far. They have six goals in their five matches but when you think four of them came in one against the Earthquakes, they are struggling to find the net. They are not shipping goals though which is a positive for them but they need to improve in front of goal.

Team News

Sporting Kansas City are without a quartet of players for this match. Jimmy Medranda, Erik Hurtado, Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace are all on the sidelines with injury but SKC are expected to be strong despite playing just on Thursday night.

There is just the one player missing for the New York Red Bulls and that is midfielder Florian Valot. He is out with a torn ACL and is going to miss a long period of time. It will be interesting to see if they change anything up after three straight losses.

Betting

I like Sporting Kansas City here. I wouldn’t want them any shorter than this but I’m happy to take them at their current price. New York Red Bulls are looking a little low in confidence whereas everything is ticking along nicely for Kansas City. They are tight at the back and they have shown that they have goals in them which is never a bad combination.

The Red Bulls have only won one of the last seven meetings between these two teams in the past so there is something about the Western Conference side that doesn’t agree with the Eastern Conference outfit. Given the way these two are playing and the results they have had recently I’m with the home side here.
