MLS 2020 – Montreal Impact vs Philadelphia Union Tips and Betting Preview

The Major League Soccer weekend concludes on Sunday night when the Montreal Impact host the Philadelphia Union in a clash which sees two sides in the top six of the Eastern Conference going at it for the three points.

Montreal Impact have had to relocate for their home matches so this will take place at the New York Red Bulls home ground which is going to be a blow. The Union might not be too disappointed though because have already won on this ground a couple of weeks ago.

Where to watch

There is no TV coverage of this match so we are reduced to the streams at the bookmakers to view the game. Kick off is at midnight in the UK.

Montreal Impact

It has been a very strange season for the Montreal Impact. Obviously it is one which was disrupted by Covid-19 but when everyone got back in action they were restricted to playing just Canadian opposition so they probably don’t really know where they are as a side at the minute. They might get to find out more now they have based themselves away from home and get set to challenge themselves against the other teams.

As you would expect with the season they have had so far, consistency has been hard to come by for the Montreal Impact but if they can find some of it then they will not only qualify for the play-offs but they will make them in a high up position which should give them some help when it comes to making it through the draw. If they are going to do that they just need to improve a little defensively because at the top end of the pitch they are not looking too bad.

Philadelphia Union

The upturn in the Philadelphia Union in the last couple of seasons has been great to see and with the demise of the Atlanta United side, I would go as far as to suggest that the Philadelphia Union are now the second best team in the Eastern Conference and if they can win here that will only further cement that position in my mind. That makes them dangerous because we know they are a good knockout team when the play-offs come along.

The one thing that let the Union down a little bit last season was their away form but they look to have rectified that this term and will be eyeing another three points on their travels to have them in an excellent position as we head deeper into the second half of the regular season. Philly have lots of goals in them through a wide range of players and they are not always the easiest to score against, especially with Andre Blake between the sticks.

Betting

The fact that the Philadelphia Union have already won pretty big on this ground this season makes me think they can come through here. They are undoubtedly the better side of the two for me and with home advantage not existent for the Montreal Impact, they should be able to show that. To be fair to the Impact they haven’t struggled for goals but they have come against the same opposition in those matches so it is a little hard to gauge.

Philadelphia have won four of their last five matches with the only game they didn’t win in that time coming at Columbus Crew where there is no shame in losing given that they are marching clear at the top of the Eastern Conference. I firmly believe they are the best team in MLS so I won’t hold that loss against the Union. Everywhere else though they are leaving a trail in their wake and I expect that to continue here.
