MLS 2020 – New England Revolution vs Philadelphia Union Tips and Betting Preview

The MLS season continues on Monday night when there is a clash between two sides in the Eastern Conference who will be looking for three points to bolster their position in the play-offs and potentially create an easier path deep into the postseason when the New England Revolution host the Philadelphia Union at Gillette Stadium.

New England go into this match in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and a win will secure their standing in the postseason while Philadelphia Union will be looking for the win which will keep them within three points of leaders Toronto FC.

New England Revolution

It has been a bit of a strange season for the New England Revolution. Usually we are used to them being spoken highly of whether for the good things they do or the struggles they have had but this year they haven’t done a lot which has stood out but at the same time they haven’t done much wrong either so they have kind of gone unnoticed. Only Orlando City have drawn more matches than the Revs in the Eastern Conference this term while only three sides have lost fewer.

One of the reasons why the Revolution have gone under the radar is their lack of goals. They have only scored 20 goals in their 18 regular season matches which is comfortably the lowest in the top eight in the East, although five of them have come in their last two matches which suggests that the penny might be dropping that they need more output up front. On the flip side only the Columbus Crew have conceded fewer than them.

Philadelphia Union

One of the best teams to watch in the entire MLS this season have been the Philadelphia Union. They have plenty of attacking intent and quality about them but they are not gung ho and don’t leave themselves open at the back. As a result they have had a good run in the MLS is Back tournament and are now sat very pretty in the Eastern Conference table and will be eyeing up a very deep run in the postseason.

The real difference with the Union this season to others is the amount of goal threats they have. They have goals right throughout their attacking core and are dangerous at set-pieces as well so it is no surprise that Philadelphia go into this match off the back of a run of just one defeat in nine matches. They are very hard to beat but have a threat at the other end of the pitch when they need it, which could be a perfect combination come the knockout stuff.

Betting

I don’t think there is a lot of mileage to expect an avalanche of goals here. The two teams have met three times this season already and have played out a 1-0, 0-0 and a 2-1 in which the third goal was scored five minutes into stoppage time so they are not always free flowing and high scoring matches when these two meet, and when you factor in the amount of football that has been played in recent times I’m not expecting this to be a classic.

Only Columbus Crew have conceded fewer goals than either of these two this season in the Eastern Conference and I would expect that statistic to ring true here. New England are lacking a bit of creativity at the minute with Carles Gil injured and in truth a draw probably isn’t the worst result in the world for either. I’m expecting a bit of a tight and cagey game here so the odds on the under 2.75 goals are perfectly fair.
