After a night off to allow us to catch our breath after three pulsating nights of action in the MLS Cup Play-offs, the competition returns on Tuesday night with the final three first round matches on what has the ability to be a stunning evening of football.
We have seen some of the craziest action this league has ever seen so far in this postseason and it is extremely unlikely that the quality or the drama will slacken over the course of Tuesday so we should be in for quite some treat deep into the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Where to watch
There is a choice of channel to watch these matches on over the course of Tuesday night. Sky subscribers can watch them on the Sky Sports Football channels but those without Sky can watch them on Free Sports. All three matches are also available at the bookmakers streaming services.
Toronto FC vs Nashville SC (23.00)
The opening match of the three on Tuesday night sees a Toronto FC side, who for a lot of the season sat on top of the Eastern Conference only to fade a little in the home straight, taking on the MLS debutants Nashville SC who will be looking to make a bit of history by becoming the first expansion franchise to win the competition.
This might be a tricky assignment for Toronto FC. It is one of those matches where they don’t have a whole lot to gain but have the lot to lose. They also don’t have many advantages in their favour either. This is a home game for them but of course they can’t play at home while the border restrictions are in place so this is taking place at a neutral venue. Throw into the mix that Nashville have already held their nerve in a postseason match and have that knowledge and confidence behind them this is a tough gig for Toronto. I still think the Canadians are the better side but something tells me Nashville won’t go down lightly so this is a no bet start to the evening.

Philadelphia Union vs New England Revolution (01.00)
The second match of the night sees two extremely familiar opponents taking each other on in what is the last of the first round matches in the Eastern Conference when the number one seeds Philadelphia Union host the New England Revolution.
Amazingly this is the sixth time these two sides will have met this term and from the first five games all that the Revolution have to show for their efforts is a single point. I’m not entirely sure they are getting much more from this one. While they do have the advantage of having won their ‘Play in’ round match to get into this draw, they are going to need to raise their game based on what we saw there. This could be a pearler of a contest but I just can’t get away from the fact that no team has left Subaru Park with a point in the regular season. Philadelphia have turned their home ground into an absolute fortress.
Not only are the Union almost impossible to beat on home turf at the present time but they have won four of the five meetings between the two this season and drawn the other. Admittedly those matches have been quite close but the fact Philadelphia have won those games can only add to their confidence here. I’m usually a reluctant player of an odds on shot in play-offs but I actually think the Union are a more than fair price here.
Seattle Sounders vs Los Angeles FC (03.30)
The final match of the first round of the MLS Cup Play-offs sees the defending champions Seattle Sounders beginning their quest to hang on to the title they won last season. They face the team they defeated in the Western Conference Championship game last term in Los Angeles FC.
There is no doubt that when the bracket was formed for this postseason that this tie leapt out off the page and with no disrespect intended to FC Dallas, it would be hard to see the winner of this match not making it through to the Western Conference final once again. Who that will be though remains to be seen. Seattle led the West for much of the season but just got touched off by Sporting Kansas City in the race for top spot late on. LAFC have muddled around in the top four or five but without ever threatening the form of last season, although a lot of that was down to the injury to Carlos Vela.
The Mexican star is back now and you would expect the goals to flow and the confidence to return to the California outfit. Goals and confidence has never really left the Sounders. They did go quiet for a period prior to Deadline Day but that was when Raul Ruidiaz was missing due to quarantining. There are no concerns on that front here so I expect two of the most entertaining teams in the MLS to deliver quite a few goals here. There were four goals when they met in the play-offs 12 months ago and I expect just as many here.
