MLS 2020 – Saturday 5th September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

It might be the international weekend but given the lengthy stoppage the MLS season had during the lockdown, it is continuing to function despite the players that are away as Major League Soccer continues to attempt to catch up.

That means there are four matches on Saturday evening as another set of fixtures get underway on what could be a decent night of football given the quality of many of the eight sides on show. Three of the four matches are live on TV in the UK and the other is available on the streaming services the bookmakers offer.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off and TV in brackets)

Houston Dynamo vs Sporting Kansas City (01.00 – Sky Football)

Orlando City vs Atlanta United (01.00 – Free Sports)

Vancouver Whitecaps vs Toronto FC (02.30)

San Jose Earthquakes vs Colorado Rapids (03.30 – Free Sports)

Preview

The action begins with a clash in the Western Conference as the leaders Sporting Kansas City make the trip to Texas to take on a Houston Dynamo side who have already beaten them 5-2 this season and will be looking for a third straight victory in this competition. Over in the Eastern Conference, the form horses Orlando City host rivals Atlanta United in a match that isn’t likely to be short of spice given the job Orlando did on Atlanta in the reverse fixture.

Later in the evening the action heads back to Canada where the latest fixture takes place. That one sees Vancouver Whitecaps at home and they will host a Toronto FC side who can go top of the Eastern Conference if they pick up a win. The final match of the night sees us back to California where San Jose Earthquakes will be looking to respond to the mauling they took in midweek when they welcome the Colorado Rapids to town.

Betting

I’m expecting goals over the course of the night and two games in particular I expect to be high scoring. The first of those is the opening one which sees Houston Dynamo taking on Sporting Kansas City. I mentioned above that the reverse fixture between these two sides ended 5-2 in the favour of the Dynamo and there is nothing on the face of it that makes me think this encounter won’t be high scoring. It might not be quite as high scoring as that one but the goal line here is only 3 which just feels on the low side. Even taking that 5-2 out, the regular season matches for SKC are averaging more than 3 per game. Dynamo games are just under three with that taken out but clearly there is the potential for goals here so I’ll take the over.

The other game where I’m expecting goals is the last one between San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids. I keep on mentioning about San Jose matches being high scoring, it is just how they are set up and it isn’t much different with the Rapids either, whose matches currently average almost 3.5 goals per game. Colorado don’t lack for goals and they’ll do well not to score against this San Jose defence which has already shipped 18 goals in its seven regular season matches. The Earthquakes know the way to the back of the net themselves though so the over 3 looks a very good bet here.
