MLS 2021 – DC United vs Chicago Fire Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There is one match left in the midweek set of matches in Major League Soccer this week and it comes along on Thursday evening when a couple of strugglers in the Eastern Conference meet at Audi Field as DC United host the Chicago Fire.

This is a long MLS season and plenty of teams make the play-offs as always but you get the impression that whichever team fails to ignite their campaign here could struggle throughout, so this feels like an important match for both sides.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live on the Free Sports channel in the UK. The programme comes on at 1.05am with the match kicking off shortly after. The game will also be available to watch on the streaming consoles with most bookmakers.

DC United

The season started well for DC United when they got the better of New York City FC but since then things have taken a turn for the worse and they go into this match off the back of a trio of defeats. The first thing to note, and something I’m sure their supporters will be quick to point out, is that those three losses were all on the road, and actually in a couple of them they were probably architects of their own downfall which will have been disappointing.

If they are going to make the play-offs this term then DC United are going to need to sort out their away form, but that might come naturally when they get their injured players back. We also shouldn’t forget that this is a transitional side under new coach Hernan Losada so maybe we should expect DC to improve naturally as the season goes on. They are back on home soil here though which will give them some confidence.

Chicago Fire

It has not been the start to the season that the Chicago Fire would have wanted, and after a very disappointing campaign last term, the pressure is beginning to mount on all those involved at Soldier Field. They go into this match without a win and just one point from their opening four matches and you sense if they don’t collect their first victory soon then something is going to have to give with the Fire.

The Fire haven’t been good on their travels for a few seasons now and that is something that is going to have to change if they are to achieve what they want to this term. What is of a real concern for them going into this match is that they have lost to a couple of sides who aren’t really standouts in the Eastern Conference. If they lose here then you kind of wonder where they are going as a club even this early in the campaign.

Betting

We have a pair of our of form sides going at it in this match but I think the longer term prospects look better for DC United than they do Chicago Fire and with them having home advantage I think if there is a winner it will be them. They have lost their last three matches but the defeats to San Jose Earthquakes and Columbus Crew don’t look particularly bad losses and they came on the road which is never easy anyway.

I expected more from the Chicago Fire but you sense this is a squad that has never really recovered from the retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger and there just seems to be a lack of direction on the pitch. Even the match they have taken a point from this season will have felt like a defeat having been 2-0 up only to draw 2-2, so it is hard to have much enthusiasm regarding the Fire at the minute. I’ll take DC here without the draw involved.
