MLS 2021 – Orlando City vs San Jose Earthquakes Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There is a full midweek round of matches in the MLS this week and they get underway on Tuesday evening when Orlando City take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a cross-Conference match at the Exploria Stadium.

These two sides go into the match in very different form with Orlando flying at the minute and San Jose struggling a little but we often see some strange results in these midweek matches and they will be hoping to create another here.

Where to watch

This match will be available to watch on the Free Sports channel in the UK with the action kicking off at 12.35am or thereabouts. It is also available to those with accounts at bookmakers who offer a streaming service.

Orlando City

It would have been very easy for Orlando City to have a hangover from the way last season ended but they haven’t had a bit of that so far. They have only lost one of their eight matches this term and look to have continued their progression under Oscar Pareja. They have won four and drawn three this season and that has them five points behind New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference table, a gap they will be looking to reduce to two points here.

Defensively Orlando have been very good this season but as I highlighted on Saturday they are without their goalkeeper Pedro Gallese at the minute as he is at the Copa America with Peru and they duly conceded half the goals in one game at the weekend that they had in seven with him between the sticks. With Daryl Dike up front and back in business the Orlando goal output should continue to rise as well.

San Jose Earthquakes

The season didn’t start out too badly for the San Jose Earthquakes with them winning three of their opening four matches but they haven’t won any of their last five, losing four of those and finally ending that winless run at the weekend when they held Austin FC to a 0-0 draw. Time will tell whether that is a good result or not but they will have been pleased to have stopped the rot. They will now hope they can build on that to find their first win in a while.

The big issue for the Earthquakes is that they have suddenly stopped scoring. This is a team who last season scored for fun but conceded just as easily. They still aren’t completely watertight but they only have one goal in their last five games which is very much unlike Matias Almeyda’s men. They will hope that the likes of Chris Wondolowski, Cristian Espinoza and the rest of the forwards can start to find their shooting boots.

Betting

Usually in a San Jose Earthquakes match I would be all over the goal line but the fact they have suddenly stopped scoring puts me off getting involved in that market and instead I’ll look at the Asian handicaps given the form of the two sides. Orlando City are flying at the minute with their only loss coming prior to the international break against the New York Red Bulls which isn’t a terrible result in the scheme of things.

While it would be better if Orlando had regular stopper Gallese in their ranks for this match, I’m not too worried that he isn’t because the Lions are pretty solid defensively and it usually takes something special to open them up. They also have a goal threat at the other end and as we’ve seen in the last five games San Jose aren’t really doing anything to trouble sides at the minute. It is never easy travelling west to east in this league let alone in midweek so I’ll take the home side to cover a goal here.
