MLS 2022 – Friday 26th August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The MLS weekend begins on Friday night this week and it does so with a couple of bangers from the Western Conference on an evening where four of the best in the competition take centre stage looking for three more points.

We have a clash between the top two to get us going and then comes the latest meeting in a true MLS rivalry so although it goes deep into the early hours of the morning there is plenty to enjoy. Both matches are live on TV for us in the UK to enjoy.

Austin FC vs Los Angeles FC (01.00 – Sky Main Event, Sky Football & Sky Mix)

The opening match of the night sees the top two in the Western Conference battling it out when Austin FC look to move to within six points of Los Angeles FC at the top of the table in what should be a cracking clash to begin the weekend.

Austin FC have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch this season, helped massively by the classy Sebastian Driussi who is two clear in the race for the Golden Boot. Austin have plenty of attacking talent in their midst but they are probably covered in that department by Los Angeles FC who have a wealth of attacking talent that most in the competition can only dream of. Both teams go into this match off the back of a surprising defeat last week and although both teams are looking good to be around in the postseason, indeed LAFC have already guaranteed their play-off place, neither will want to go into them in bad form. These two might meet again in the postseason so this is a chance for a marker to be laid down. It is hard to bet against LAFC but Austin won in Los Angeles earlier in the year and are certainly dangerous. I think under the Friday primetime spotlight we’ll see the best of these two sides which means goals should be on the horizon. The goal line is only 3 here and with the likes of Driussi, Carlos Vela, Gareth Bale, Cristian Arango, Maxi Urruti, Diego Fagundez and Emiliano Rigoni all going for us I expect that line to be covered.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders (03.00 – Free Sports)

The second match of the evening comes from Providence Park where the Cascadia Cup rivalry resumes when the Portland Timbers play host to the Seattle Sounders in a match neither ever want to lose but can’t afford to anyway.

These two began the weekend in tenth and ninth positions respectively and a point outside the top seven so the losers here will have an upward task on to make it to the postseason. Portland started the season slowly when injuries were absolutely killing them but they haven’t really kicked on like many expected them to. 12 draws from 27 matches in one reason why. Seattle also started the season slowly but they had an excuse. They were putting all their attention into winning the Champions League, which they did successfully. They have improved in the second half of the campaign but not to the extent they have lodged themselves in the top seven. Between them these two have won just one of their last 10 matches so form is becoming a real issue. That goes out of the window in a derby match but neither of them inspire me into a bet right now.
