MLS 2022 – Sunday 1st May Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The MLS weekend concludes on Sunday evening when the final three matches of the latest round of games take place across the two Conferences on a night where the defending champions are one of the teams taking centre stage.

The three matches are all on TV for us in the UK so there is no reason to miss any of the action, although if you have work on Monday then it might be that the final match is a little late for you so will need to be watched on catch up.

New York City FC vs San Jose Earthquakes (18.00 – Free Sports)

The first of the three matches on show on Sunday sees the defending champions New York City FC looking to continue their good form and move up the Eastern Conference table when they take on the San Jose Earthquakes.

NYCFC have caught fire in the last couple of weeks, bagging 11 goals and looking every bit the team who won the MLS Cup last season but they take on a team who beat the Seattle Sounders last week in the exciting San Jose Earthquakes, a team who lack consistency but certainly don’t lack for entertainment. San Jose matches this season average almost 4.5 goals per game while New York City matches are just a shade below four goals per outing on average. These two have found a real groove in front of goal recently though. NYC have 11 in their last two while the Quakes have 11 in their last four. The champions looked very good last week and I expect another high scoring contest here so I’m happy to get on over 3.25 goals in this Sunday opener.

Nashville SC vs Philadelphia Union (21.00 – Sky Football)

The middle match of the three on Sunday comes from Tennessee where Nashville SC will look to find a bit of consistent form when they take on the early Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union in what should be another good battle.

When Nashville are on it they have the attacking talent to win any game but the Union are a well drilled outfit who give little away but still carry plenty of threat at the other end of the pitch. Union blazed out of the traps this season but haven’t won either of their last two and might not find a trip to Nashville all that easy. This will be the first home game in the new stadium for Nashville so it is going to be quite some occasion. I would imagine that will inspire the home side here but I’m no fan of opposing Philadelphia at the minute so I’ll sit this one out and enjoy the spectacle.

Los Angeles FC vs Minnesota United (03.00 – Free Sports)

The final match of the night is the one only the night owls will be able to watch but it comes from the Western Conference as Los Angeles FC will look to go back to the top of the table when they host Minnesota United.

Minnesota make the trip to California off the back of two successive wins but they go up against a LAFC who have suffered just the one defeat this season and who are looking ominously strong. They look good in both ends of the pitch too with Carlos Vela looking like he is back to his MVP form and then defensively they have conceded just eight goals. Minnesota have conceded two less than that so if you look at the defensive records of the two teams you would have to think this will be a tight, low scoring match. I’m not convinced though although I’m not certain either way really. I’m happy to sit the late night game out too.
