MLS 2022 – Sunday 28th August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The MLS weekend concludes on Sunday evening when the final three matches of the latest round of action take place in what is a largely Eastern Conference dominated night of football across the leading league in America.

Two of the three matches are live on TV for us in the UK to get stuck into and enjoy with the other one available on the bookmaker streams. None of them are too late on a bank holiday weekend so there is no reason not to enjoy them all.

Atlanta United vs DC United (21.00 – Sky Football)

The Sunday action begins at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium as the former champions Atlanta United aim to keep their flagging play-off hopes alive when they host the team bottom of the Eastern Conference in DC United.

This hasn’t been a particularly good season for either of these two franchises but Atlanta have had the better of it. DC United have been woeful all season and you sense things might still get worse before they get better as Wayne Rooney sorts out his squad ahead of the next campaign. The positive for DC is that Christian Benteke might finally make his debut this week but they need him after copping a 6-0 hiding by Philadelphia last week, a match which ended their run without scoring to five matches. Atlanta United haven’t been brilliant themselves this season but their last three defeats, which are all they have lost in their last 10, have been to Austin FC, LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls, all decent enough sides. The Five Stripes go into the weekend five points off the top seven so they will know this is a match they have to win to keep their postseason hopes alive. They aren’t winning as many matches as they should but they aren’t losing too many in recent times. This is an ideal chance to get a win and sort the goal difference out.

Orlando City vs New York City FC (00.30 – Free Sports)

The second match of the evening is another clash from the Eastern Conference as Orlando City look to remain in control of their postseason destiny when they play host to the champions New York City FC.

Successive wins have left Orlando heading into the weekend in fifth place in the Eastern Conference but there are still only two points between them and the first team outside the play-of zone so they can’t afford to rest up here. New York City FC are pretty much guaranteed their spot in the play-offs as they go about attempting to defend their MLS Cup title but prior to last week they weren’t in good form so they will be eager to bet on the win over the Chicago Fire with another here for their own peace of mind. There are too many question marks over both sides for me to part with my money here. Had Pato been available for Orlando it might have been different but he isn’t so it isn’t. I’ll leave this alone.

New England Revolution vs Los Angeles Galaxy (01.00)

The one match which isn’t televised in the UK on Sunday evening into the early hours of Monday morning sees the Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution going up against the LA Galaxy at Gillette Stadium.

Revolution go into the weekend one spot outside the play-off places but a win here will do their hopes of making the postseason no harm. They might have to do it tough though as they are without a number of important players in Gustavo Bou and Dylan Borrero. Galaxy are in exactly the same position in the Western Conference with consistency becoming a real issue for Greg Vanney and his charges, particularly on the road where they have picked up one point from their last five outings. The Revs have too many injuries for my liking while Galaxy haven’t really been trustable all season.
