Big Matches
We return to the MLS campaign with some big matches not least the interestingly named ‘Hell is Real’ derby as the Supporters’ Shield leaders FC Cincinnati head to their arch-rivals Columbus Crew in a marquee clash. We also have the Canadian Clasico as Toronto FC welcome CF Montreal to BMO Field. The other appealing match as we wait for the debut of Lionel Messi in MLS sees the Seattle Sounders taking on an Atlanta United who had a Leagues Cup to forget and who needs to show a lot more if they are going to be competitive in MLS this term.
Best of the Rest
There will be some good action right across the remaining matches. Minnesota United made it through to the knockout stage of the Leagues Cup and they head to New York City FC while there is a Western Conference match of interest as St Louis City SC, who disappointingly bombed out of the Leagues Cup early, take on an Austin FC side who went out equally as quickly. Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes failed to live up to expectations in Leagues Cup and they meet in Canada while the Houston Dynamo welcome Portland Timbers in what might just be a defining match for both teams.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of matches over the course of the evening and they both involve goals. Columbus Crew matches are going to be very entertaining for the remainder of the season now that they have added Diego Rossi to their ranks and even more so as they go about chasing down the top four spot that will give them the home game in the first and third matches in the play-offs should they need it. They take on FC Cincinnati who will be double motivated to win this because they didn’t really deliver to their potential at Leagues Cup and they will want to knock off their rivals here. There are no shortage of goals in either of these two teams and so I like over 3 goals in a match where the reverse meeting ended 3-2.
Another match where the reverse meeting heralded five goals is the one between St Louis City SC and Austin FC, both of whom have a bit to prove after a disappointing Leagues Cup campaign. To be fair to St Louis City SC, they were in a tough group and were starting to battle some injuries so it might have been to their benefit that they bombed out in the group stage and got the three weeks off. Austin FC have adjusted their roster during the recent transfer window and should be in a position where they can show more of the form we saw from them last season. Both these teams are better going forward than they are at the back and we saw that play out perfectly in that opening week clash. I’m expecting a goal line of 3 to be covered here.
