Big Matches
With the leaders of the Western Conference not in action until Sunday, the majority of the attention will be on the Eastern Conference where the top two meet at Subaru Park where Philadelphia Union will host Columbus Crew which means a first return to Daniel Gazdag. If that game is a draw when FC Cincinnati can end the night on top of the Eastern Conference if they can get the better of Austin FC in one of few cross-conference clashes. Another one of those comes from Red Bull Arena where we have a repeat of the 2024 MLS Cup final as the New York Red Bulls go in search of some revenge when they host the champions LA Galaxy. Minnesota United are in second in the Western Conference and they can close the gap between themselves and the leaders Vancouver Whitecaps to four points for 24 hours if they can overcome Inter Miami at Allianz Field.
Best of the Rest
Portland Timbers are riding high in the Western Conference and they will be looking for three points in the last match to kick off when they host Sporting Kansas City. The first game of the night will see two massively underachieving sides battling it out at Soldier Field when Chicago Fire host Atlanta United while two of the bottom four in the Eastern Conference meet when Toronto FC host DC United. New England Revolution are the form team in MLS and they head to Florida to take on Orlando City who have gone scoreless in four of their last five. Two entertaining matches are on the cards when St Louis City SC host San Diego SC while Colorado Rapids take on San Jose Earthquakes. Nashville SC and Charlotte FC are both having positive seasons and they meet at GEODIS Park.
Betting
I’ll go with three bets over the course of the night with the first of them coming at GEODIS Park where Nashville SC are ticking along very nicely under the radar and can extend their fine home record when they host Charlotte FC. Nashville have had a couple of quiet seasons but they are coming to life under BJ Callaghan and a 4-1-1 home record is testament to that. In those four home wins they have notched 14 goals so scoring certainly isn’t a problem which bodes well against a usually strong Charlotte FC defence. That defence was opened up at will by Columbus Crew last weekend though and Charlotte have now lost three of their five away matches this season, with their only win being in Montreal which doesn’t carry much weight at the minute. Nashville sit second in MLS on xG created this season and on home soil this feels like another chance for them to get a win.
It is all about the goals for my other two bets and we head to altitude for the first of them where Colorado Rapids host San Jose Earthquakes. I’ve mentioned it before but the Earthquakes are one of those statistical freaks in that they have the highest xG in MLS this season and the highest xGA and that alone can tell us that this game is going to be laced with chances. The Rapids are in the top 10 for xG this term so they are going to get chances against most sides and they have some technically good forwards to put those chances away. San Jose have scorers in their side with the likes of Cristian Arango now the joint top scorer in the competition. The goal line for this one is 3.25 which is a nudge higher than I like to take but I can allow the extra 0.25 on the pie given those xG and xGA statistics for the Earthquakes. There were three goals in the first meeting between these two this season and with the altitude in play another can come along in this one.
On the flip side of that, I’m delighted to be able to get a 3 goal line for the match between the Portland Timbers and Sporting Kansas City. These two have already met this season in Kansas City and the Timbers won 4-2 and the three meetings prior to that ended 2-1 to Portland, 3-3 and 4-1 to Kansas City so it isn’t bucking a trend to expect goals here. Both these teams are averaging well over 3 goals per game this season too. Portland have played 11 matches and they have contained 40 goals while in the same number of games, Sporting Kansas City have seen 38 goals in total. There have been at least five goals in the last four Portland matches while only three weeks ago Kansas City were involved in a 5-3 win. There are goals for both these sides and plenty against them too so over 3 goals looks a very safe play.
