Big Matches

We get the night underway in the Western Conference this week when Austin FC play host to the champions Los Angeles Galaxy with the visitors looking for the first win of their season. Austin will have the chance to move up to second spot in the table for a few hours with a win here. When they are done the attention will turn to the Eastern Conference for the clash between the 2023 MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew and the current holders of the Supporters’ Shield in Inter Miami. The current pacesetters in the race for the Shield are the Vancouver Whitecaps and they make the trip across the border to go up against a St Louis City SC side who will be looking to turn their season around after a promising start before a slump in results.

Best of the Rest

There are a few other standout matches on Saturday with one of them seeing Charlotte FC putting their perfect home record on the line when they welcome San Diego FC to town. Philadelphia Union are beginning to stutter a little and they host an Atlanta United side who haven’t really justified the spending so far. Chicago Fire and FC Cincinnati have both made promising beginnings to their campaigns and they meet at Soldier Field while over in the Western Conference, Minnesota United play host to FC Dallas and arguably the standout match sees the Portland Timbers playing host to Los Angeles FC in the first match for the Californian side since their manager Steve Cherundolo announced that he is going to leave at the end of the season.

Betting

Three bets jump out to me on Saturday evening and we begin at Red Bull Arena where New York Red Bulls look good things to take care of a very poor DC United side. The one thing you have to be when playing DC is strong at centre-back and the Red Bulls have that covered which should nullify the threat that Christian Benteke will provide. Once they have done that then the Red Bulls can get to work at the other end against a defence which is leaking like a sieve at the minute. DC have conceded 18 goals in their eight matches so far which is two more than any other team in MLS. The Red Bulls are unbeaten at home this season whereas DC are 0-1-2 away from home but 12 of those 18 goals against have come on their travels. This looks a great chance for the Red Bulls to pick up another win.

Vancouver Whitecaps are the early real surprise packages in the MLS this season and I see no reason why they can’t extend their unbeaten start to the campaign with a win at a St Louis City side who are looking like a team who are getting a bit lost in themselves. St Louis started the season well but were not scoring many and now that they have started conceding that inability at the top end of the pitch is beginning to haunt them. Vancouver don’t have any such problems. They are a joy to watch in attack but they are miserly at the back as well and if there is a winner here I do expect it to be Vancouver. They have the potential to blow teams away which I haven’t yet seen evidence of that St Louis can do. Roman Burki and Edward Lowen have been big players for City in their two years in MLS and both miss this game. Vancouver look good to get another win here.

Moving into the final match of the night and I find it very hard to believe that we won’t see the goals flow when San Jose Earthquakes meet Sporting Kansas City. San Jose have this incredible record so far this term of generating the best xG in MLS but also the worst xGA in it as well. Kansas City head to San Jose with the worst defence in the Western Conference and are averaging two goals a game against them this term so it would be a real surprise if the goals don’t flow here. San Jose matches average 3.5 goals per game this season and Sporting Kansas City matches aren’t far behind. These two have already combined for three goals in the reverse meeting and here at PayPal Park we can see one more in what should be a game full of chances.
