Big Matches

San Diego FC took the lead in the Western Conference in midweek and with Vancouver Whitecaps not in action until Sunday night, the newcomers to the league will be looking to extend their advantage at the top of the table when they travel to FC Dallas. Over in the Eastern Conference, the leaders Philadelphia Union aren’t on show until Sunday night so the chasing pack have the chance to close the gap with two potential winners of the east meeting when Orlando City host second placed FC Cincinnati. The other match of note on Saturday night takes us to PayPal Park where we have the Cali-clasico between the San Jose Earthquakes and the champions LA Galaxy with the home side looking to build on a high scoring win in midweek.

Best of the Rest

The Seattle Sounders return from the Club World Cup where they competed well on Saturday night and they will be looking to push on when they host Austin FC. Elsewhere, the Chicago Fire will go in search of a much needed home win when they welcome the poor travelling Charlotte FC to Soldier Field while the in form Nashville SC will look to pick up three more points when they head to the capital to face off against DC United. Back Over in the West, the Houston Dynamo welcome St Louis City SC and Sporting Kansas City take on Real Salt Lake. There is an interesting cross-conference clash too when the New England Revolution play host to the Colorado Rapids at Gillette Stadium. Two matches take place in Canada with CF Montreal hosting New York City FC and Toronto FC facing the Portland Timbers.

Betting

There are a few bets that interest me over the course of the night but the prices are a little short of what I wanted, particularly with this being a weekend fixture list after a midweek one. We also still have to deal with players being away at the Gold Cup as well so after a round where I had a couple of winners in midweek I’m not going to push things, not least because I really like the look of the two matches on Sunday, so I’ll go with one bet.

That comes in the Cali-clasico where goals should be on the menu. San Jose Earthquakes are the top scorers in MLS now after bagging four more in midweek and it would be a huge surprise if they don’t add to their tally against a LA Galaxy defence which has given up the second highest xGA in the MLS this season. The Galaxy have given up the most goals in the competition with 41 in their 19 games, 26 of which have come on the road. San Jose are improving defensively but Galaxy aren’t in a position where they can sit back and keep things tight and play for a point. They have to go for the jugular and try and win matches. Both teams have an average of more than three goals in their matches and I think that average increases with over 3.5 goals landing here. It has landed in six of the last nine clashes between these two in MLS and there were three goals in two other matches. The over looks good to me here.
