Big Matches
We have a couple of standalone matches ahead of the majority of the action once again on Saturday night and we begin in St Louis where St Louis City begin life without Olof Mellberg when they welcome the entertaining San Jose Earthquakes to that part of Missouri. When they are done we are off to Music City for the clash between Nashville SC, who are in excellent form at present, and New York City FC at what is becoming a fortress GEODIS Park. The big match in the regular slate of games is the one between two of the better sides in MLS on paper as Inter Miami play their final match prior to the Club World Cup when they host Columbus Crew.
Best of the Rest
Philadelphia Union are leading the way in the Eastern Conference and they will look to maintain their advantage when they make the trip to Texas to take on FC Dallas. FC Cincinnati are their leading challengers and after three without a win they will hope to take advantage of a home match against DC United while Orlando City will be looking to maintain their progress when they welcome the Chicago Fire to their part of Florida. Over in the West, Vancouver Whitecaps are in Champions Cup final action this weekend so the chasing pack get the chance to close the gap on them at the top. San Diego FC lead that charge and they are at home on Saturday evening when Austin FC are the visitors to Snapdragon Stadium. Elsewhere, the champions LA Galaxy host Real Salt Lake and there is a repeat of the Eastern Conference final of last season as New York Red Bulls host Atlanta United.
Betting
I like a couple of bets over the course of the night with the first one very much being goals in the match between Orlando City SC and Chicago Fire. That might sound weird when the reverse meeting was 0-0 but Orlando away matches are much lower scoring than their home ones even allowing for their 3-2 loss in Atlanta in midweek. In that match they lost one of their midfield pivots Cesar Araujo to a red card and he is missing here so the Orlando defence might be a little more exposed than usual. Orlando are a real force going the other way though and with Luis Muriel rested for most of the game on Wednesday night he is expected to come back in which will do the chances of goals no harm. The reverse meeting was 0-0 but the cumulative xG was a ridiculous 4.82. This fixture ended 4-2 and I’m expecting something along those lines here because all the numbers suggest goals.
The other bet I like is for San Diego FC to get revenge for their defeat to Austin FC earlier in the season when the two met. Austin kind of grabbed San Diego by surprise in that match but they won’t do it again and I just don’t see the Texans having the firepower to get the job done here. That 2-1 loss for San Diego was when they were missing a number of players, in particular Chucky Lozano who is back now and having a huge impact on this side. San Diego are 5-3-1 at home with 17 goals in those nine matches whereas Austin are just 2-1-4 on their travels with one point from their last four matches and 10 goals conceded in that spell. The only time in 16 outings that Austin have scored more than one goal was the reverse meeting but there were mitigating circumstances there. If they don’t score multiple times here I don’t see them getting anything other than a good beating. I expect San Diego to put the Texans to the sword here.
