Big Matches
The two standalone matches to get us up and running on Saturday see some big sides in action. The 2023 MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew start out the day when they play host to the Houston Dynamo before we head across to the Western Conference for the clash between two sides who will be in Champions Cup action in midweek when the Seattle Sounders take on Los Angeles FC in a really tasty looking match. The Philadelphia Union are the early pacesetters in the Supporters’ Shield race and they look to have a good chance of picking up three more points when they go to Gillette Stadium to take on New England Revolution.
Best of the Rest
The San Jose Earthquakes have also started the season like a house on fire and they will look to retain their perfect beginning when they host Minnesota United in a good looking match. Vancouver Whitecaps are the other perfect team so far this campaign and they have an all-Canadian clash against CF Montreal to navigate. The new boys San Diego FC will go in search of a second MLS win when they make the trip to take on Real Salt Lake. Austin FC will look to find their second win of the campaign when they host the Colorado Rapids while the Portland Timbers will look to build on their win last week when they meet Nashville SC in music land. FC Cincinnati will look to put their thrashing at the hands of the Philadelphia Union behind them when they host a Toronto FC side who are looking for their first win of the new season.
Betting
I’ll start the betting off in the opening game of the night where Columbus Crew just look too big at 4/5 to see off the Houston Dynamo. Watching Houston last week they could play right into the hands of the Crew here and although Columbus have Champions Cup commitments in midweek, they are probably out of that competition so I expect Wilfried Nancy to go strong here. Columbus have won their first two matches of the season and will only get better from here, even more so when they sort out the replacement for Cucho Hernandez but the way that Houston played into pressure against Miami, the high press of Columbus could do some real damage here. Dynamo didn’t really carry a goal threat last week either and they could well be sitting ducks for the 2023 champions.
I like a couple of goals bets over the course of the evening with the first of those coming in the match between Atlanta United and New York Red Bulls where a 2.75 goals line looks very low with the attacking talent that is on display here. This match will have the likes of Emmanuel Latte Lath and Miguel Almiron as well as Emil Forsburg and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting among others and although the Red Bulls are solid are the back that defence is going to be tested fully here. Atlanta have flattered to deceive defensively all season so far and I don’t see that changing here so over 2.75 goals looks a really good thing.
I also fancy goals in the match between DC United and Sporting Kansas City. DC United carry an obvious threat in the Golden Boot winner from last season in Christian Benteke but their attack has looked more rounded so far this season but there are still no signs of things improving defensively and a reinforced Sporting Kansas City attack should be able to take full advantage of that. We haven’t seen anything from the Kansas City defence to suggest that they are overly tight this season either so it feels obvious to expect goals to flow here too. The goal line is slightly higher for this one but not without good reason and with two standout number nines on show in Benteke and Dejan Joveljic I expect this line to be covered too.
