MLS 2025 – Sunday 8th June Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The reduced weekend in the MLS 2025 season concludes on Sunday night with three matches which take place across America and even into Canada on an evening where the Western Conference is very much the focus of attention.

As is always the case with the MLS, all three matches get full coverage on the MLS Season Pass on Apple TV including an hour long build-up before the opening game. The bookmaker live streams will show all the action too.

Portland Timbers vs St Louis City SC (00.00)

We begin the night at Providence Park where the Portland Timbers will look to move into the top four in the Western Conference for a couple of hours at least when they host lowly St Louis City SC in the opening game of the triple header.

St Louis haven’t had the season that they wanted. The move to bring Olof Mellberg in as coach never worked at all. To their credit, they have disposed of his services already and in the one match they have played since the Swede departed they picked up a good win over San Jose Earthquakes and will be looking to build on that. That will be tough though because the Timbers are emerging as one of the better sides in the West and they are unbeaten in seven matches since the opening weekend of the season. One positive for St Louis is Portland are missing a few players to international duty here so that, while not making the visitors favourites, could at least allow them to get into the game a little easier. I need to see more of St Louis without Mellberg to show me that last week wasn’t just a team released from the shackles. I would usually like Portland here but the absences put me off so I’ll leave this one alone.

Los Angeles FC vs Sporting Kansas City (02.00)

The second match of the night takes us to California where the Club World Cup bound Los Angeles FC sign off their MLS campaign for the time being when they host a Sporting Kansas City side who are in danger of missing the playoffs once again.

SKC are going to need a very strong second half of the season but there is little to suggest that is on the horizon. You wonder if after sacking Peter Vermes earlier in the campaign, whether they are going to use the summer to continue to build the squad ahead of a much better season next term. That certainly isn’t the case for Los Angeles FC. They are about to grace the world stage and will want to head off to the Club World Cup with a win. This part of California is incredibly tough to go to and get a win. Only Austin FC have done it this season with LAFC 5-1-1 on home soil. Kansas City are 2-2-5 away from home and have a couple of players on international duty and this feels like a bad spot for them. LAFC have a couple away on international duty but they are stacked with squad depth and off the back of that fine win against Club America last weekend, I expect them to come through this unscathed and run out fairly comfortable winners.

Vancouver Whitecaps vs Seattle Sounders (02.00)

The biggest match of the night is the one which sees us going across the border for the Cascadia Cup clash between the Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps and their rivals Seattle Sounders, two teams in the top four of the table at the start of the night.

The Whitecaps have been the best team in the MLS this term by a country mile but they have to rebound from the huge disappointment of being drubbed in the CONCACAF Champions Cup last weekend where they went down 5-0 to Cruz Azul without registering a single shot. Worse still, they came back from Mexico with an illness running through the camp and they had to shut down their training on Wednesday and have a skeleton one on Thursday. That isn’t ideal and neither is the amount of players that Vancouver have on international duty so this is going to be a very patched up Whitecaps side doing battle here. Seattle have a few players away too but they are just starting to build up a head of steam and it seems like physically they will be much stronger of the two. Seattle depart for the Group of Death in the Club World Cup after this match and will want to go there with a win. This should be a cracking watch because of the rivalry but it probably isn’t one to bet on.
