Big Matches

It might be a midweek round but we have some cracking looking matches on show over the course of the night. The Philadelphia Union are now in front in the race for the Supporters’ Shield and they will be expecting to gain another three points when they host CF Montreal while the leaders of the Western Conference, San Diego FC, also face Canadian opposition when Toronto FC are the visitors to Snapdragon Stadium. There are two other standout fixtures on the night with FC Cincinnati playing host to Inter Miami and Nashville SC welcoming Columbus Crew to GEODIS Park. All four teams are well in the race for the Supporters’ Shield so expect fireworks in those matches.

Best of the Rest

Minnesota United aren’t out of the running for the Supporters’ Shield either and they will look to continue their positive run of form when they host a Los Angeles FC side who will be out to show that they are one of the better teams in the Western Conference. Vancouver Whitecaps were blazing a trail in the Western Conference earlier in the season but their form has completely dipped and they will be looking to turn that around when they make the trip to go up against the Houston Dynamo. Seattle Sounders currently sit in the top four in the West and will look to preserve that position when they host the Colorado Rapids. Orlando City are chasing a lofty spot in the Eastern Conference and CF Montreal are the visitors to that part of Florida while the champions LA Galaxy will go in search of a third win in succession when they host Austin FC.

Betting

Three bets catch my eye over the course of the night. Regular readers will know that in midweek I am after home sides, preferably against teams who were on their travels at the weekend as the recovery time and preparation time is next to non-existent and we certainly have that in the form of Charlotte FC who host DC United. DC United were in Los Angeles on Saturday night so they have been crossing time zones and now they have to get out to Charlotte for this game. That is bad enough but Charlotte are one of the better home teams in the competition and DC United are pretty ordinary on their travels. Charlotte returned to winning ways at the weekend while it is now just one win in their last 11 matches in MLS for DC United. With everything that DC have been through in terms of travel and lack of prep this looks a good chance for a DC win and a solid one at that.

The second bet I like is for both of the Conference leaders to win their matches. Philadelphia Union ae the first of those and they host a CF Montreal outfit who were also away from home on Saturday. They were in Orlando on Saturday and all the travelling and everything in between this could be a step too far for the Canadian side. It was a tough assignment anyway but Philadelphia are as comfortable as anyone at home and they should put another three points on the board. San Diego FC are the other team and they are also up against a Canadian opponent in the form of Toronto FC. Things are slightly better for Toronto FC in that they were at home on Saturday but they suffered an equaliser against them 11 minutes into injury time and they have that blow to get over. San Diego are one of the better teams in MLS at present and in Anders Dreyer might just have the front runner for the MVP. Toronto have lost their Italian DPs and have just one win in their last seven matches.

The final bet that I like on Wednesday night comes from Lumen Field where the Seattle Sounders go up against the Colorado Rapids in a match where the Sounders will be expected to win. This is another case of a team having to travel in midweek and while the time zones aren’t quite as significant, the drop from altitude could be. Colorado are only 2-3-5 on their travels and four of those defeats have been in their last five road games. This is a tough assignment for anyone at the minute because Seattle have clearly been fuelled by playing at the Club World Cup. They have picked up seven points from nine in the time since they exited that tournament and look in a good groove. Seattle are 6-3-1 at home this term and it would be something of a surprise were they not to be 7-3-1 when the final whistle blows here.
