Big Matches

The pick of the matches on Wednesday night is the last one to kick off where the top two in the Western Conference battle it out with top spot on the line when the Vancouver Whitecaps welcome San Diego FC to BC Place. Vancouver begin the night on top of the table but they will be overtaken if the league new boys come away with the win. Over in the Eastern Conference, the leaders Philadelphia Union will be on show when they make the trip to Soldier Field to take on a Chicago Fire side who will be looking for results as well as entertainment.

Best of the Rest

FC Cincinnati sit second in the East and they have a trip to CF Montreal to navigate on Wednesday evening. Columbus Crew are looking for some consistency and they will be hoping that arrives when they go up against big spending Atlanta United at Lower.com Field while two form teams meet at Gillette Stadium where New England Revolution host Nashville SC. Minnesota United are having a good season and they will be hoping that continues when they host the Houston Dynamo while Colorado Rapids will be hoping that they are not the second team to lose to LA Galaxy this season. St Louis City SC will look to continue to rebuild after Olof Mellberg and they host an Orlando City SC who could be sleepers for the Eastern Conference title.

Betting

I’ll take a couple of bets over the course of the night with the first of them coming in the match between Columbus Crew and Atlanta United where the home side look good things. Atlanta haven’t gelled at all this season but their away form is a particular concern for Ronny Deila. They have taken just two points from eight road trips and were emphatically beaten at New York City last time out when they were drubbed 4-0 by a side missing its main striker. That won’t be the case for Columbus who aren’t missing any forwards and there were just one or two signs going into the break that the Crew are starting to find their better form again under Wilfried Nancy. I expect the Crew to be too good for a misfiring Atlanta side.

Later in the night I just have to oppose Vancouver Whitecaps who still have a number of players away at the Gold Cup, and big ones at that. You don’t need to be understaffed when taking on this San Diego FC side right now because going into the break they were going really nicely. Chucky Luzano has standout quality and there is a genuine case that Anders Dreyer has been the best player in MLS this season. This match will be a real battle for the ball but with the players that Vancouver have missing it wouldn’t be a surprise were San Diego to dominate the play and as such come away from this one with a result. San Diego have won three of their last four and while this has been a brilliant first half of the campaign for the Vancouver Whitecaps, they have only won two of their last six so I like the visitors to avoid defeat here.
