Big Matches
The Vancouver Whitecaps are currently heading the race in the Supporters’ Shield and they are in action on Wednesday evening despite having the Champions Cup final at the weekend. Third place in the West, Minnesota United, are the visitors to BC Place. The Philadelphia Union are in front in the Eastern Conference and they head across the border to an improving Toronto FC while second placed in the East, FC Cincinnati, will look to bounce back from their loss to Atlanta United at the weekend when they welcome former star Luciano Acosta and his FC Dallas side to TQL Stadium. There is also a battle of California as the champions LA Galaxy host the San Jose Earthquakes.
Best of the Rest
Inter Miami begin a huge few weeks with a home match against CF Montreal which they will be expected to dominate while two form sides meet at Lower.com Field where Columbus Crew play host to Nashville SC. Two rivals meet at the Benz as Atlanta United will hope to build on their win over Cincinnati on Sunday when Orlando City SC are in town and moving over to the Western Conference, San Diego FC head to Lumen Field to take on Seattle Sounders in a key matchup while the Portland Timbers welcome the Colorado Rapids to Providence Park. Both New York sides have home assignments with NYCFC hosting the Houston Dynamo and the Red Bulls taking on Charlotte FC in a clash with plenty of attacking talent on the field.
Betting
Three bets catch my eye in the midweek round of action where we begin at Mercedes-Benz Stadium where I’m expecting to see goals between Atlanta United and Orlando City SC. You could quickly argue that Orlando road games don’t serve up many goals and with 13 of them in seven games you would be right but tactically this feels like a game both sides should prosper in. Atlanta looked to have found something at the weekend in front of goal, scoring four and should have had many more against FC Cincinnati but their back three system offers up the chance for the two DP wide stars for Orlando to do some damage. The eye test would tell us that Atlanta attacked with better quality and more numbers on Sunday night and the vibe around them is the new system suited their key players much better. With all that in mind, over 3 goals looks good here.
It is goals that I like in the second bet of the night as well as the Cali-Clasico between LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes looks perfect for them. The obvious statistic in play here is the one which has the Galaxy as worst for xGA and San Jose third worst. San Jose still have the best xG total in MLS this season though so it would be a huge surprise were the goals not to flow here. To be fair to the Galaxy, although they are winless in 15 games this term, they have looked much better offensively recently and with Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec back that is no surprise. They look so weak defensively though with no midfield shield and a back four making poor decisions and it is hard to believe that this vibrant and all-in San Jose attack won’t punch holes in this Galaxy defence. Goals are expected the other way though so the 3.25 line looks very much in play where three goals have been scored in the last 11 which would guarantee us half of our stake back but in those 11 games four or more have come along seven times. We should be blessed with goal action here.
The third and final bet I like comes at Providence Park where the Portland Timbers can come up trumps against a gun shy Colorado Rapids outfit. Colorado probably haven’t taken as many steps forward as they would have wanted to this term and the absence of Rafael Navarro is really biting them. The backups are nowhere near as good as him. Colorado have won their last two but they have been scrappy affairs and on home soil where the altitude allows them to dominate. Away from home they have lost three of their last four and a loss at DC United looks particularly bad. Portland have won just one of their last five but three of those have been on their travels to tough home grounds. On home soil this term, since the mauling they took at the hands of Vancouver in their opening match, which looks nowhere near as bad a result now as it did then, they are 3-3-0 with the draws being against both Los Angeles sides and Seattle who offer more than Colorado. I’m loathe to take road sides in midweek because of the lack of prep time and travelling and everything so this looks a good spot to oppose the Rapids.
