NFL 2018 – New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills Betting Preview

The NFL week concludes just west of New York this week when the Buffalo Bills host the New England Patriots in an all-AFC East clash in the Monday Night Football. We’ve seen some good Monday night games recently but the odds suggest this one could be a blowout.

It is not just the odds which suggests that. New England go into the campaign with a 5-2 record on their slate while the Bills have gone 2-5 so far and are pretty much out of the division race if they slip up here.

Buffalo Bills

When the Buffalo Bills thrashed the Minnesota Vikings in week three to record their first victory of the campaign the optimistic Bills fan would have thought that could be the catalyst of something good. Unfortunately for those types they have seen their team put up just 31pts of offense in four matches since then, although amazingly that was good enough to win one match in that time.

In the main when they have come up against strong offenses they have been found wanting defensively. Baltimore shoved up 47pts on them while the Chargers put up 31 and then last week Indianapolis skinned them for 37 more. You would argue they face an offense more powerful than any of those here so what they have to offer defensively will be tested to the full.

New England Patriots

As a lot of New England seasons do, this campaign actually began quite slowly for the Patriots but they have clicked into gear in no uncertain terms now. Since their defeat in Detroit in week three of the season they have won four on the spin and have scored at least 38pts in each of those victories. There is clearly nothing wrong with the New England offense that is for sure.

One of the reasons why they are scoring so well however are the plays their defence is making. They have picked up 14 turnovers over the course of the campaign so far and they will be hunting plenty more against one of the more struggling offenses in the league. When the defensive plays and the offensive mite are put together it is some combination.

Betting

It is hard to make much of a case for the Buffalo Bills. When a team is so heavily up against it you look to see who can make plays for them and with Derek Anderson at quarterback it isn’t him and really and truly there isn’t much in their offense at all. That can be fine when you face a less potent offense but you can have the best defence in the world but you’re not going to stop this Patriots offense.

New England Patriots have met good defences such as Chicago in their recent winning run and powerful offenses such as Kansas City and Indianapolis and they’ve beaten all comers. Although a 13.5pt handicap looks large, and is large, if we consider the very real possibility that Buffalo will fail to score more than 14pts it actually doesn’t look that big after all. Baltimore, Green Bay and Indianapolis have all kept Buffalo to single points this year and covered two touchdowns against them. I’m expecting New England to add their name to that list.
