NFL 2018 – New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns Betting Preview

The third week of action in the NFL season gets underway on Thursday even though it doesn’t seem like five minutes since the campaign began. The Thursday Night Football this week comes from Ohio as the Cleveland Browns take on the New York Jets.

Both sides have had their ups and downs already this season and so both would be looking for the win here. All eyes will really be on the Cleveland Browns to see what they can come up with after two crazy weeks.

Cleveland Browns

I guess the Cleveland Browns are still wondering how they have not won a match yet this season. They tied against the Pittsburgh Steelers and lost by a field goal to the New Orleans Saints but in both matches they had a kick to win but inexplicably missed. Zach Gonzalez has lost his job as a result but you wonder if there is a deeper mental feeling that is stopping them from getting over the line.

There have been some positives for the Browns. In both matches they have restricted two powerful offenses to just 21pts each which suggests that defensively at least they are in a good place. Tyrod Taylor is making plays but Cleveland are not finishing drives off and as we’ve seen they have been unable to rely on their kicker although a change in personnel in that position could help.

New York Jets

The new era started in fine style for the New York Jets when Sam Darnold led them to a powerful victory against the Detroit Lions in their opening match of the season but they came back down to earth with something of a bump when they were beaten by the Miami Dolphins last week. They could do with another victory here with a couple of sides in their division looking a good deal better than them.

The Jets offense does look like it is set up to make big plays although with a rookie quarterback pulling the trigger the defence of the opposing side is always going to feel like it is in the game. To be fair the Jets’ own defence has been delivering the goods so far this season as well but they need to put everything together to pick up a win.

Betting

I always say that Thursday night matches are the hardest to bet on and this could be the toughest of the lot. Cleveland are getting backed like they can’t lose but of course this is the Browns so we know they can and most probably will. The Jets aren’t much higher than Cleveland in the reliability stakes it has to be said. I can’t be taking the Browns as favourites but I don’t back road sides on TNF either.

To be fair both defences have shown a good deal of promise this season and I think that is the angle to take in the match. The Jets haven’t conceded more than 20pts in a game so far and the Browns have only conceded 21 in their two games. With these offenses stuttering in the red zone and the pressure on both to deliver a win I fancy we will get one of those low scoring tight battles.
