The second half of the tasty double header of NFL action on Sunday night sees the AFC Championship title being decided when the Kansas City Chiefs host the New England Patriots for the right to head to Atlanta for the Super Bowl next week.
Both teams had emphatic wins in the divisional round of the playoffs so they arrive into this title match in good form and if this one turns out to be anything like their battle in the regular season we are in for quite some treat.
Kansas City Chiefs
It is about now that their excellent regular season has its big advantage for the Kansas City Chiefs. In leading the way in the AFC they claimed the number one seeding which means this semi-final if you like is in front of their own fans. Maybe more important that the fans is their possible added comfort in what could turn into extreme conditions for this contest so there is much to be positive about for the Chiefs.
This season has been all about the offense for the Chiefs but just in the last few weeks their expert pass rushers have been getting to the opposing quarterback and all of a sudden they are looking like a complete unit. At some point Patrick Mahomes might recognise the importance of the situation but he isn’t called ‘Showtime’ for nothing and if New England are relying on that they might be barking up the wrong tree.
New England Patriots
You have to admire the quality of the New England Patriots that in a league designed to avoid single team domination, here they are in an amazing eighth successive AFC Championship game. While a lot of that is down to the weakness of the division they are in, they still have to win postseason matches to get here and their consistency in them is incredible. They are now one match away from another Super Bowl and the chance to avenge last year’s defeat.
The other reason why New England are consistently at this stage of a season is because their all-round balance makes them so hard to contain. If Tom Brady and his receivers don’t get you their running backs will and then on defence they have a wonderful art of taking away the strength of the opposition. Unlike Mahomes, we know for sure that Brady won’t wilt on the big stage under the bright lights.

Betting
When these two met in the regular season we were treated to a high scoring epic and while the scoring might not be quite as high in this one I do expect the offenses to dominate and this to turn into something resembling a shootout for the right to head to Atlanta to take on the winners from the NFC in the Super Bowl in 14 days.
I wouldn’t be completely surprised if we see a tight start to this match but it will have to open up at some point given what is on the line and then we might see things going a little bit crazy. Both these teams can go down the field quickly and there are major doubts about the backfields of the pair of them so this should be a really entertaining encounter. With all that in mind I’m happy to take over 6.5 touchdowns.
