The final match of week three of the NFL season comes from the nation’s capital as the 0-2 Washington Redskins host the 1-1 Chicago Bears in an NFC battle in the Monday Night Football at FedEx Field.
Both sides will have wanted to make better starts to the season than they have done but they have the chance to showcase their talents on primetime which is a big thing. It could be that a win here kicks the campaign into life for whoever gets it.
Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins are already right behind the eight ball in that not only have they lost both their matches so far this season, but they have dropped them to teams in their division which is never ideal. Therefore in front of their own fans it is imperative that they get up to winning ways here if they are going to offer anything resembling some sort of a competitive season in the NFC East.
If they are going to get up and running then they have to get a running game going. Their three main running backs have only gone for 56 yards off 25 carries in their opening two matches and while the shortage of runs has been because they’ve been behind, they need much better output from the running plays they attempt. They also need their defence to step up to the mark although in fairness to them they have gone up against a couple of dynamic offenses.
Chicago Bears
We’ve seen two very low scoring matches from the Chicago Bears thus far and that is a trend I would expect to continue for much of the campaign. That is because their defence looks one of the best in the league, led of course by the imperious Khalil Mack, while their offense has struggled for longer than I would care to remember, but part of that is down to the fact that they know they have such a reliable defence.
Mitch Trubisky has struggled this season but amazingly it has been a kicker that has come to his rescue. Eddy Pineiro looks like he is the man to finally solve the kicking woes for the Bears although he is rated as questionable to appear in this match which is less than ideal. Trubisky needs to get the ball in the hands of David Montgomery and Cordarrelle Patterson more while Allen Robinson is a friendly target in the passing game.
Betting
I’m not expecting a classic here I have to admit. Primetime matches so far this season have been very competitive and low scoring and I fancy we are going to see that trend continuing in this match. I don’t expect Washington to move the ball as readily against this Chicago defence as they have in their first two matches but by the same token the home defence should play a better game against a more limited attack.
I can see this one developing into something of a defensive battle given the strengths and weaknesses of the Chicago Bears which makes me think that the point line of 42.5 is a little on the high side. Teams are more amped on primetime before we’ve already seen Chicago like a rabbit in headlights in a high profile match. The under looks a fairly obvious call to me in this one.
