We save the best for last in the NFL on Sunday as two of the best in the NFC collide in a Sunday Night Football that looks like it is going to be oozing in quality as the San Francisco 49ers host the Green Bay Packers in a match we could well be seeing against in the postseason.
The San Francisco 49ers have only lost one match this season but their opponents here have only been beaten twice so we have two elite teams doing battle with a high seeding in the playoffs one of the many things at stake.
San Francisco 49ers
I think a lot of people expected to see an improvement in the San Francisco 49ers this season with Jimmy Garropolo back fit, but whether as many thought it would be this dramatic and significant I’m less sure. The offense was naturally going to improve with the return to fitness of the quarterback the backroom staff gave up so much for to acquire, but the defence of a few years ago has resurrected itself, making the Californian side a tough nut to crack.
The two real appealing elements of this 49ers outfit is the defence and the running game, both of which are among the best in the league, and in some cases are the best in it. That is to take nothing away from the passing game, which has really caught fire since Emmanuel Sanders was traded for. He and George Kittle give Garropolo a couple of very exciting weapons and back up the elite element of this side nicely.

Green Bay Packers
You also have to give the Green Bay Packers credit for the improvement they have made. Theirs was a little more obvious in that it was just a case of things getting a bit stale under Mike McCarthy. The interesting thing about the Packers though is the dual nature of their campaign thus far. In the early stages the defence was bailing out the offense and then more recently it has been the other way round only to turn again. It all adds up to an 8-2 record.
The Packers head to the bay knowing that they need to win this one to keep Minnesota Vikings at a big enough distance to have their destiny comfortably in their own hands. Defeat in this match means the top the division on just divisional record alone which will create some unneeded nerves. The Packers offense has gone on a slight down trend in the last couple of weeks and they look to respond against a top defence here.
Betting
The Green Bay Packers offense has just gone a little quiet at the wrong time for my liking here so I’m going to take the San Francisco 49ers to cover a field goal in this match. To be fair to the Packers, their defence is showing signs of the top level one we saw at the beginning of the campaign, but whenever George Kittle is in the 49ers offense they tend to come alive. His presence opens up so many options.
Although it has tapered off a little in the last couple of games, this is a San Fran defence with more interceptions than passing touchdowns against them this term and one which hardly ever allows a rusher into the end zone too. Yes, Green Bay have Aaron Rodgers but he will need to be at his brilliant best and the receivers around him have great games. Even then that might only keep them semi-competitive. It is the 49ers for me.
