NFL 2019 – Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos Tips and Betting Preview

We are galloping towards the halfway mark in the NFL season and Week 7 begins with a good old divisional showdown as the Denver Broncos host the Kansas City Chiefs in an intriguing AFC West match in the Thursday Night Football.

A few weeks ago this would have been written off as an easy night at the office for the Kansas City Chiefs but two losses later with the Broncos winning two at the same time suddenly makes this a very interesting match up.

Denver Broncos

After a 0-4 start to life under Vic Fangio, it looked like this season would be something of a write off for the Denver Broncos, but almost out of nowhere they have rebounded and won their last two matches, to offer some hope of a semblance of a competitive season. There are still a few issues for them over the course of the piece but as I always say you can never criticise a team for winning, however it is done.

The Broncos have still only put up more than 20pts once this season and ironically that was a match that they lost. The key thing is with their defence they don’t need to pile up the points. There is an air of a soft schedule in their last two matches with both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Tennessee Titans having losing records but you can only beat what is in front of you. I think it is fair to suggest the Broncos need an improvement here.

Kansas City Chiefs

It looked like the Kansas City Chiefs were cruising towards another playoff campaign when they opened up their season with four straight victories, but they have hit the buffers in recent weeks and their record as skidded to 4-2 heading into this AFC West battle. Patrick Mahomes and his men remain huge favourites to go on and win the division, and a win here will restore their dominance of it.

One area of concern for the Chiefs throughout the season so far has been their defence, especially against the run which they simply haven’t been able to stop at any stage, getting gashed in that department for the last two weeks. Another problem has been the injuries they have had, although slowly but surely they are beginning to level themselves out a little which is needed, especially here on a short week. Despite the injuries their offense has generally functioned well enough.

Betting

Had this match been a couple of weeks ago I would have had no hesitation in taking the Kansas City Chiefs to win it but they say two weeks is a long time in sport and given what we’ve seen in that time, I’m not so sure I want to be getting on them here, especially with it being the short week and to be fair their defence was on the field for a long time on Sunday.

I’m going to look to exploit that though, and the weakness of the Chiefs defence against the run. With that in mind I’m happy to take Philip Lindsay to rush for more than 68.5 yards. He has covered this total in three of his last four matches and in the one he didn’t surpass it he only had nine carries but still went for 53 yards, so he is running the ball well and I expect him to be doing plenty of it here to exploit this KC defence and perhaps more importantly to keep the Chiefs offense off the field. The last five first choice running backs the Chiefs have faced have burned them for more than 68.5 yards. I expect Lindsay to add his name to the list.
