NFL 2019 – Los Angeles Rams @ Seattle Seahawks Tips and Betting Preview

Week 5 of the NFL season is a big one for the UK fans of the sport as it is the week where they first of the four London matches takes place but before then there is a cracking Thursday Night Football to kick things off when the Seattle Seahawks host the Los Angeles Rams.

The two NFC West rivals meet knowing full well that San Francisco 49ers have put the pressure on them with their start to the season, so this is a match neither will want to lose even this early in the campaign.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks go into this match with a 3-1 winning record for their season, but there are question marks over what they have actually beaten. Their three wins have come over the Cincinnati Bengals, albeit by just the one point, Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals and the only one of those victories which would normally carry anything of note is the one against the Steelers, but that was the match Ben Roethlisberger left early with injury so doubts are around over the quality of that win.

You can only beat what is in front of you and to be fair to the Seahawks that is what they have done, but we might get a better feel for their prospects during and after this match. This will be a good test of their defence and generally it is that side of the ball which gets the Seahawks anywhere. Russell Wilson has the chance on primetime to once again prove his worth so there is a lot to look out for here.

Los Angeles Rams

It looked like the Los Angeles Rams were going to cruise to the postseason and who knows where after three comfortable victories to get their season up and running but those plans came crashing down last week when they shipped 55pts to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the surprise of the campaign so far. Admittedly they have a number of defensive injuries but if you had said to the Rams they would put up 40pts and lose I don’t think anyone would have believed you.

There is a lot of talk about the improvements that can still come from the Rams offense but when you stick 40pts up on someone I’m not sure I buy that. That they conceded 27pts to the Carolina Panthers in their opening match and then 40pts last week would be much more of a concern to me. Something is fundamentally wrong with their defence, not just injuries. That side of the ball needs to come good but on a short week it might not be here.

Betting

We have seen in the past that this Sean McVay defence can leak a number of points but nothing to the extent that we saw last week and that has to be a concern. Of course it is something they will focus on but the question is whether they will be able to do anything about it in just four days, some of which involve travelling. I’m not convinced that they can.

I’m not saying that the Rams can’t win this match, although I’m never a fan of taking road sides in these Thursday night matches at the best of times, but I do expect the Seattle Seahawks offense to have a good night. Russell Wilson can get it done through the air and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if they get their ground game going here too. I like the Seahawks to put up more than 24.5pts.
