We have reached the business end of the NFL season and week 14 of the campaign gets underway when two form sides meet in the Thursday Night Football when the Los Angeles Rams host the New England Patriots in a repeat of the Super Bowl from two seasons ago.
The Patriots came out on top in that encounter and are beginning to find their feet this season but the Rams head the way in the NFC West and need to keep winning to stay there. This one is very nicely poised to get a big week underway.
Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams took a little while to get up to speed this season but they are playing some good football at the minute and despite a loss to the San Francisco 49ers a couple of weeks ago, they rebounded well to see off the Arizona Cardinals last week and look primed for a big display here. The Rams will kick off the match knowing that if they can win this game it will put a lot of pressure on the remainder of the division when they play their matches over the rest of the weekend.
Slowly but surely the Los Angeles offense has come to the party this term and that has been the real difference because their defence has generally performed well all season. That is certainly no surprise because man for man it is one of the better defences in the league. If they can perform strongly here then it will be down to the likes of Jared Goff and Cooper Kupp to keep the Rams in control of their own destiny.

New England Patriots
Five weeks ago the New England Patriots were going nowhere with a 2-5 record and while you still can’t make them favourites to win make the play-offs and have a good crack at the title, it isn’t going to take a huge amount from here on in to convert their current 6-6 record into something that can steal a wildcard. Although this isn’t a vintage Patriots side, if they do make the postseason teams will still fear them just because they have been there and done it.
The biggest problem the Patriots had in the earlier part of the season was their offense just couldn’t get anything going. It wasn’t helped by Cam Newton contracting Covid but now that he has recovered he is starting to flourish and the Patriots head to Los Angeles having won four of their last five matches. The offense starting to function properly is helping the defence find their own top form so things are coming together nicely for the former champions.
Betting
I’m not expecting a high scoring match here. I think both sides have the defensive qualities to get the job done for their teams here which will result in a lot of offensive struggles and long third down requirements. I also think both teams will look to run the ball a fair amount over the course of the night to try and keep control of the ball and the clock for as long as possible. I’m not convinced it will as low scoring as the Super Bowl between the two sides a couple of years ago but I don’t expect the scoring to flow naturally.
The points line for this match is 44.5 which looks a little on the high side to me because I’m not convinced both teams are going to put up more than 20 points and I certainly don’t see either going into the 30s for points scored. There will be a lot of running the ball taking time off the clock and defensive plays made so over the course of the night in what I suspect will be a Rams win just on the short week nature, I believe the scoring will stay under 44.5pts.
