NFL 2021 – Indianapolis Colts @ San Francisco 49ers Tips and Betting Preview

The Sunday action in the NFL this week concludes out west when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Indianapolis Colts in a Sunday Night Football which is as close to must win for the two teams involved as you get in Week 7 of the campaign.

Both teams go into the match with losing records and are already chasing the tails of runaway teams in their division so the team which loses here will be searching for a wildcard route into the playoffs and even that would need some work.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers go into the match 2-3 for the season but with the Arizona Cardinals already 6-0 and with what is expected to be a routine clash with the Houston Texans on Sunday, if the 49ers are going to have any chance of keeping pace with the NFC West pacesetters then this is simply a match they have to win. They should be refreshed after their bye week and that came at a good time as it has allowed them to get quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back from injury.

The 49ers lost their last three prior to the bye week but they have lost two of those to the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals who are two of the best teams in the league. The other match was to the Seattle Seahawks which wasn’t a good loss but that was the game Jimmy G got injured in. Defensively San Francisco haven’t been too bad but constant disruption in personnel on the offense has stalled their progress. There aren’t as many excuses here though and they will be looking to put on a complete performance.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts started their season with three successive defeats but to be fair to them they have won two of their last three since then and the one in between they were well up on the Baltimore Ravens before Lamar Jackson went into overdrive. The signs are that the Colts are finding their feet and at no point in that time really has Carson Wentz delivered what we might have expected from him, so there could well be even more to come from the Colts.

One area where the Colts have caught fire is in the run game with Jonathan Taylor in great form at the minute but defensively there are still some questions to be answered, especially in the passing game as we saw when they melted against the Ravens a couple of weeks ago. Their red zone defence in particular needs a lot of work doing to it. They head to San Francisco with their confidence rising though and they shouldn’t be written off.

Betting

Usually I would take a stand on the Sunday Night Football but with both of these teams having question marks over them and the weather forecast for rain and storms in the bay area, after a couple of winners earlier in the day I don’t really want to risk the match outcome in a game where there might not be much between the two sides overall, especially if the 49ers have used their bye week well. If I was forced into a bet I’d go with the progressive Colts but I’m happy to look elsewhere for a punt.

That comes in the form of Jonathan Taylor to score a touchdown at any time. This 49ers run defence has been a little soft so far this season and Taylor looks to be attacking his lanes enough to take advantage of that. The beauty of Taylor is that he can get it done on the ground but he is becoming a handy passing option for Carson Wentz too at the minute and the 7/5 that he goes in for a touchdown on a night where conditions might dictate that he sees more of the ball than usual looks good to me.
