Incredibly we have reached week five of the NFL season already and it kicks off with a huge clash in the NFC West as the Seattle Seahawks host the Los Angeles Rams in a very tasty looking Thursday Night Football showdown.
The Rams lost their undefeated record to the Arizona Cardinals last week and have to rebound on the short week when they head to the 2-2 Seattle Seahawks who are continuing to perform despite a huge question which nobody seems to want to talk about!
Seattle Seahawks
The season actually looked to be going great for the Seattle Seahawks halfway through week two when they had already seen off the Indianapolis Colts in their opening game and were well in front of the Tennessee Titans in their second one. They failed to convert that advantage though and then injuries saw them well beaten by the Minnesota Vikings in week three, but to their credit they bounced back and saw off the San Francisco 49ers last week and should go into this match with confidence high.
They would be going much better this season if it wasn’t for the fact that their defence just can’t seem to defend the pass whatsoever. This early in a season that statistic can often be distorted if they lead teams and opposition have to throw the ball but that hasn’t been the case. Even when they led the Titans the Tennessee side rode the Derrick Henry train rather than any aerial threat. The Seahawks go up against arguably the strongest passing offense in the league so they are going to have to improve in that department else this could be a long night.

Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams were looking the real deal through three weeks of the NFL season. They are our Super Bowl pick this term and after they dispatched of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to go 3-0 for the campaign that pick looked very strong. It took a bit of a hit with a defeat to the Arizona Cardinals last week, but credit where it is due Kyler Murray is probably leading the MVP race so although they wouldn’t have wanted to lose that match, it wasn’t the most terrible result known to man.
The one concern, other than the fact they have to rebound from a defeat on the road on a short week which is never easy, would be that they face a similar quarterback here in Russell Wilson. The Rams defence wouldn’t really contain Murray last week so it will be interesting to see how they go against Wilson. One area where there is no concern is on offense where on a going night Matt Stafford and his receivers could pick the Seattle defence apart.
Betting
I would expect the Los Angeles Rams to bounce back with a win here but readers of our previews over the last couple of seasons will know I’m always reluctant to take road teams in these Thursday night matches, especially ones who go into the match off the back of a defeat. The good thing for the Rams is they do at least have the comfort of having faced a similar quarterback test last week but that still isn’t enough to inspire me to back them.
One reason for that is because point scoring looks so natural for both teams in this match that the over on the point line looks much the better bet. The line is at 53.5 which doesn’t look high enough to me. It would be a huge surprise if Matt Stafford and his deep list of receivers don’t feast on the Seattle secondary but unless Aaron Donald can get pressure on Russell Wilson then Seattle are equally as likely to score points. I’m expecting something of a shootout here so I’m happy to be on the over 53.5 points in this one.
