NFL 2021 – New York Giants @ Kansas City Chiefs Tips and Betting Preview

Week 8 of the NFL season concludes with the Monday Night Football, which this week comes from Arrowhead Stadium as we see if the Kansas City Chiefs can sort themselves out when they play host to the New York Giants.

Both these teams go into the contest with losing records. That probably isn’t a surprise where the Giants are concerned right now but it certainly is with regards to the Kansas City Chiefs who were expected to dominate the league once again.

Kansas City Chiefs

If you had said that after seven weeks of the season the Kansas City Chiefs would only have three wins to their name you would probably have got a few funny looks but that is exactly where we are at. What is even more of a surprise if they have only won one home match so far this term. These are just things we are not accustomed to seeing from this Chiefs team. Even when they haven’t been at their best in recent seasons they have still found ways to win.

The Chiefs were expected to be even better this season because they went and got better protection for Patrick Mahomes but he has been quite ordinary by his standards. He has thrown a lot of interceptions and that is something we certainly aren’t used to seeing. It has to be said the offense isn’t getting helped out by the defence. They rank last or near the bottom of the league in a lot of defensive metrics and while they have always sacrificed a bit of defensive strength by opting to use up a lot of their cap on their vibrant offense, they haven’t defended as bad as they have this season before.

New York Giants

The New York Giants have only won two of their seven matches and that feels like where they are at presently. They did win last week though when they shocked the Carolina Panthers but even then I’m not sure that is a massive form guide. The Giants have won two of their last four matches after starting with three losses in succession and the two defeats in that run were to the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys who are flying this term, so there might be signs of them warming to the task this term.

Injuries have had a massive impact on the Giants this season with a number of offensive players missing matches along the way. Even Daniel Jones has had to come out of a game after taking a serious hit. Jones is still missing some key offensive players here which is clearly going to be an issue but if the Giants’ defence can force turnovers, and they might not even have to force them given how regularly the Chiefs are surrendering them, then New York might be able to stay close here.

Betting

I fully expect the Kansas City Chiefs to win this match but whether they cover a spread of around 10 points I’m less sure. The backdoor cover is too big a threat for me to get involved in that, especially when you consider this match is all about winning for the Chiefs and getting their season back on track. If they happen to look good in the process then happy days but they just need any sort of a win. I also can’t be backing a team to cover double digits when they give the ball up as much as they are recently.

I wouldn’t want to be on New York Giants either per se but there is a bet involving the G-men that I do like and that comes in the form of their quarterback Daniel Jones. He has a rushing line of 22.5 yards and I think he covers that. He isn’t a Lamar Jackson runner or anything close to it but he can move his legs, to the extent he’s actually the leading rusher for the Giants this season which is a pretty damning statistic for them. Kansas City are struggling to get to the quarterback this season anyway but they are really struggling to contain them and you’ve got to think Jones will have to make plays with his feet to keep drives going with no Saquon Barkley to call upon. I think he’ll be involved enough to cover this line.
