NFL 2021 Playoffs – Pittsburgh Steelers @ Kansas City Chiefs Tips and Betting Preview

The last of the NFL 2021 Playoffs matches in the Super Wild Card weekend on Sunday night comes in the Sunday Night Football where the Kansas City Chiefs go up against the Pittsburgh Steelers in an iconic AFC matchup.

This could be a pivotal night for the league too as it could be the last dance for Ben Roethlisberger unless he can lead his Steelers side to a road win. Patrick Mahomes is the future and he’ll be looking to see to the end of a legend.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs know all about peaking at this time of the season. They have been to the last two Super Bowls so this is becoming second nature to them. The reason why they have been in that position is because they are one of the best teams in the AFC, if not the best, and they have players with egos who love nothing more than to show they are the best at this stage of the season. The Chiefs might have a bit of a point to prove here having lost to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl last term.

I think it is fair to say that the Chiefs haven’t been as dominant, confident or as authoritative this term but they have still won the AFC West and still possess enough danger for teams to fear them. As the number two seeds there is still a chance that the road to the Super Bowl goes through Kansas City. The Chiefs were beaten by the Bengals a couple of weeks ago which might have been no bad thing just to sharpen up their minds ahead of this playoff run.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Such has been the craziness of this season that the Pittsburgh Steelers were a potential declined field goal attempt away from not even being in these playoffs at all. Had the Las Vegas Raiders not kicked a field goal in the dying seconds of overtime last week, or even missed it, the Steelers would have been watching on from home. They won’t need me to tell them they have used up a sizable share of their nine lives already just to make it to this stage of the campaign.

If Pittsburgh are going to win this match then you would imagine they will have to ride their defence hard because they have shown nothing on offense to suggest that side of the ball is going to lead them to glory. They have struggled to get a run game going and the deep pass doesn’t look to be within the compass of Ben Roethlisberger anymore. He does get Juju Smith-Schuster back for this match but you would think the likes of T.J. Watt and the Steelers pass rush has to disrupt the Kansas City passing game for Pittsburgh to have any chance here.

Betting

This is another match where I like the under in it. I’m not massive on the Pittsburgh Steelers here and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get run over like they did when these two met earlier in the season, but even then that wasn’t the highest scoring game in the world. That match came at a time when Kansas City weren’t really running the ball but over the last few weeks they have established their run game a lot more as they have had to manage one or two issues with injuries and Covid in their passing game.

Even if this does turn into a Kansas City blowout, I’m not convinced they give it large for four quarters against what is a physical defence with another match to come next week. Even if they do I still think the Steelers are going to have to put points on the board for the under 47.5pts to not land and that is where the stumbling block for the over comes. Once Pittsburgh get behind they are going to have to spread the offense and abandon their initial plans and then it gets away from them quickly. I’ll take the under here.
