The second match of a busy Super Wild Card Sunday in the NFL 2021 Playoffs sees the Dallas Cowboys looking to make it through to the divisional round when they play host to the San Francisco 49ers in a tasty NFC clash.
These two sides arrive in the playoffs in pretty decent form and will undoubtedly be eyeing up a run to the Super Bowl. In order to take a step closer to getting there they will have to come out on top in this match.
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys head into the postseason off the back of five wins from six matches which took them to the NFC East title and confirmed they would be hosting this match. The one loss in that run was against the Arizona Cardinals who seemed to get Dallas at it and took full advantage and it will be interesting to see how they go if this one turns into a dogfight. They did win and run up the score against the Philadelphia Eagles last week but the Eagles rested a number of starters so we can’t really read a lot into that.
The one thing we do know is that this Dallas defence get to the quarterback with relative ease but that can expose their secondary and if Trevon Diggs isn’t making interceptions the Cowboys passing defence does give up yardage. On the flip side of that, Dallas have a very balanced offense with a powerful passing game and a rushing game which is very good, although I often feel it should be better in terms of output than they sometimes deliver.

San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers might feel that they have a huge advantage in this match. Going into their last regular season game there was a way that they could make it into the playoffs with a defeat but it soon became obvious that route wasn’t going to remain open for them so they were effectively playing knockout football against the Los Angeles Rams, so they have the knowledge here of knowing they can play their best stuff when the pressure is really on.
That win over the Rams was the fourth in five matches to round out the regular season for the 49ers and they head to Texas looking close to the side which went to the Super Bowl a few seasons ago. That is because they are pounding the run game, getting enough out of their passing game and their pass rush has gone bonkers in the last month or so. Matt Stafford got sacked five times last week and while this Dallas o-line is much better than the Rams’ you can feel sure the 49ers will get the pressure on them.
Betting
Although the first two matches in this Super Wild Card round were higher scoring than maybe some expected, I’m not convinced this one will follow that trend. The San Francisco defence might well dictate that but actually this Dallas Cowboys offense have shown a few struggles on third down recently so they might not move the chains as easily as they were earlier in the campaign or they did last week. I also expect the 49ers to do plenty of running the ball to keep the Cowboys offense off the field for as long as possible.
That all makes me think the 52.5 point line looks a little on the high side. The order of the day here for as long as possible as far as the San Francisco 49ers are concerned will be long drives which is going to chew up the clock and with their defence likely to restrict Dallas at certain times in the match I really don’t see this being an explosive scoring contest. When you add in the playoff clock protection that both sides will operate when they lead 52.5pts just looks a few too high.
