We are into the final quarter of the NFL 2024 regular season and Week 15 opens up with a huge clash in the NFC West when the San Francisco 49ers play host to the Los Angeles Rams in a match which has massive implications to it.
The Rams and the 49ers go into the Thursday Night Football trailing the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West and with matches beginning to run out there isn’t really room to lose for either if they want to win the division. That should make this even more competitive than usual.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers would have been expected to have a much better season than they have had given that they went to the Super Bowl last term. They go into this match 6-7 for the year and probably needing to win out if they are going to win the division and might even need to win their last four if they are to have a chance at a wildcard spot. Injuries certainly haven’t helped them but key players are starting to return which would give them a good chance.
The 49ers ended a slump of three matches without a win last week when they coasted past the Chicago Bears. To be fair to them, those three losses were against sides with winning records so maybe it is hard to judge them negatively on that, it is just so much was expected of San Francisco this term which is why they look bad results. As with most sides though, with the offense starting to fire up, their defence isn’t under as much pressure so there might still be life in the reigning NFC champions yet.

Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are in a better position than the San Francisco 49ers in terms of their record and position in the division. They are 7-6 for their year and a win here would move them onto eight wins which would be the same as the Seattle Seahawks ahead of their match with Green Bay on Sunday night. The Rams head into the match knowing that they have beaten San Francisco this season already which should give them some confidence.
While the Rams’ record is respectable, it probably would have been better had it not been for some offensive injuries in the middle of the campaign. Those players have returned to the side now and the result of that is successive Los Angeles wins coming in here, which includes a high scoring victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. They might need to score plenty of points here but they have the offensive power to do it. If their defence can make plays it will certainly be welcome.
Betting
This should be a cracking match but as always on a Thursday Night Football I’m a little reluctant to get involved in the match outcome. I do think that this will be high scoring because both offenses match up pretty well but the bet that I would be happiest siding with is the passing yards for Brock Purdy because I do expect the San Francisco 49ers to be utilising their passing game more than usual because they have got horrendous injury issues in the running back position.
Purdy has a passing yards line of 253.5 which looks low anyway but when there is a genuine possibility that the game state will have the San Francisco 49ers playing from behind in this one it looks even lower. Purdy comes into the match off the back of a fine performance against Chicago last week where he threw for 325 yards in a game San Francisco dominated. The Rams have just given up 342 yards to Josh Allen and a patched up receiving core and actually give up the second highest yerds per passing attempt this season. Purdy is going to need to throw the ball in this match and I fancy him to cover this line as a result.
