We open up week 14 of the NFL 2025 season with the Thursday Night Football which is a massive contest for the two sides involved as the Detroit Lions welcome the Dallas Cowboys to Ford Field in a huge NFC showdown.
These two sides currently occupy the two spots immediately outside the playoff places in the NFC so the winners here will boost their chances of extending their season while the losers will have plenty of repairing to do and not much time to do it in.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions would have been expected to win the NFC North this season but after their defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day, they find themselves third in the table and two matches behind the Chicago Bears. If the Lions want to push for the possibility of winning the division then you would think they need to be looking to win out from here and an 11-6 record probably doesn’t get it done. Before they worry about that, they need to find enough wins to secure a wildcard and one against a rival for that spot here would be very welcome.
All eyes will be on Jahmyr Gibbs here. There is a direct correlation between him having a good game and the Lions generally winning and him being wrapped up and them often losing so it is vital that the Lions get their running back going which they couldn’t do against the Packers last week. Detroit are beginning to really struggle defensively so the longer they can sustain drives through their running backs the better while Jared Goff will need to play smart here too.

Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys head to Michigan off the back of a fine win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day, which built on their comeback win against the Philadelphia Eagles the previous week and now means that they have won their last three matches and are finally making their move this term. Whether they can reel in the Eagles who they remain two games behind in the NFC East remains to be seen but their chances of doing so would take a major dent were they to lose this game.
The improvement in the Cowboys has coincided with defensive reinforcements coming into the side and now they look much more balanced, whereas earlier in the campaign they couldn’t get off the field and that piled the pressure on the offense. That offense is starting to click into groove too and if the Cowboys’ offensive line can repel the pass rush of the Lions then you could see this team really licking their lips at what they might encounter here.
Betting
Although this is a Thursday night game, it isn’t like other Thursday games in that both of these teams played a whole week ago so there is no short week disadvantage or anything like that. In essence, this is a Sunday game so we can attack it with a little more comfort. That did make me consider the Dallas Cowboys to win this one but I’ve got enough respect for the Detroit Lions to just hold fire on that and instead look for a player prop bet for my interest in this one.
That comes in the form of Dak Prescott and his passing yards. The Detroit secondary has fallen apart in the last couple of matches with Jameis Winston and Jordan Love tearing it apart and Dak Prescott is a level up on that, and so are his receiving options. You would imagine this will be a high scoring match so there should be plenty of passing situations for Prescott and with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens looking really good I expect the Dallas quarterback to cover a 269.5 passing yards line. In the last two weeks he has thrown for 354 yards and 320 against solid Eagles and Chiefs defences and I expect 270 from him here.
