The middle match of the three in the NFL 2025 Playoffs on Sunday night takes us to the home of the defending champions as the Philadelphia Eagles go about setting up a trip to Chicago next week when they host the San Francisco 49ers in their Wildcard Round clash.
The Eagles retained their NFC East title successfully and now they will set about doing likewise with the Super Bowl one. The 49ers will be keen to be at the big dance which is at their own stadium next month so expect a competitive contest here.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles were nothing like as dominant as they were in the regular season last year but the NFC East was nowhere near as strong as it was a year ago so they were able to cruise their way to the title and although their overall record is only good enough to be the three seed having been the number one seed a year ago, they were able to rest the players they wanted to last week and enjoy that they are as close to peak condition as can be expected at this stage of a season.
With that in mind, we probably shouldn’t take much notice of the fact that they were beaten by the Washington Commanders in that one, instead we should concentrate on the three wins prior to that where their defence was in excellent mood. There is still a feeling that the offense isn’t clicking to the powers that it can but they should get some beef back on the offensive line which should not only give Jalen Hurts better protection but should benefit the run game too.

San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have had maximum motivation throughout the season with the Super Bowl being at their home stadium this year and although they weren’t quite able to secure the number one seed in the NFC last week, or the NFC West title which was also up for grabs in the match, they have made it through to the postseason where they can leave it all out on the field in an attempt to end their season at the main event on home turf.
The big problem for the 49ers this season has been their bashed up defence. It has meant that they haven’t been able to get hardly any pressure on the opposing quarterback and when they have gone up against good teams they have been ruthlessly picked apart. Thankfully for them, Brock Purdy returned at a good time to fire up the offense to win a few shootouts but even that offense was shut down a little too easily for the San Francisco liking last week so Kyle Shanahan is going to need to put on a coaching clinic for the 49ers to come out of this one alive.
Betting
I expect the Philadelphia Eagles to win this match but betting them on the spread carries a bit of a risk because this San Francisco 49ers offense has the potential to be dangerous, as we saw a couple of weeks ago when they came out on top of the Chicago Bears in an epic shootout. With that in mind, I’m going to take the 49ers offense out of the equation and keep my betting for this one based on the Philadelphia offense and take them to score over 24.5 points.
We haven’t always seen the best of this Philly offense this season but there is the potential for Jalen Hurts to have an absolute field day with this secondary with the time he is likely to get to pick his passes and even if San Francisco find a way to pressure him he has enough checkdowns and a running back you would think is waiting to break out to get the job done. Add in the Philadelphia defence who will go hunting turnovers and I don’t think 24.5 points is too much to cover. A pretty ordinary Tennessee Titans put up 24 points on this San Fran defence a few weeks ago and there is a lot more offensive power on this Eagles unit. I expect this line to be covered.
