NFL 2025 – Washington Commanders @ Miami Dolphins Tips and Betting Preview

We have a bumper day of action in the NFL 2025 season on Sunday and it gets underway with the first ever match in Madrid as the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium plays host to the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Commanders.

Both of these teams are 3-7 for their year and it is hard to see either of them being competitive over the course of the year from here on in so this is a chance for both of them to release the shackles and entertain a new audience for the league.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins might only be 3-7 for their season but two of those three wins have come in their last three matches so they haven’t packed it in for the year yet and they have the chance to showcase their skills overseas and look to promote both the game and the quality that they have within their squad. Chasing down the New England Patriots in the AFC East isn’t going to happen and a wildcard will need an insane end to the season so the Dolphins have a bit of freedom about them here.

The two wins recently were appealing ones when you consider that they beat competent opponents in Atlanta Falcons and the Buffalo Bills, the latter always a good win for a Miami side. Their offense fired nicely in both matches and that bodes well for them here. One thing which doesn’t is the fact that it is more than 10 years since the Dolphins won overseas so they are going to have to put their travel issues behind them here if they are to pick up the win.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders head to Spain having lost their last five matches and much like the Miami Dolphins they are going to need to sprout wings and fly if they are going to emulate last season and make it into the postseason again. They just have too many injuries for that to be a realistic proposition so at some point in the coming weeks their focus will turn to next season and maybe spoiling the odd party or two on the way there.

The big problem in this losing run for the Commanders has been their defence which is absolutely ravaged by injury. It hasn’t been the biggest help in the world that Jayden Daniels has been injured at quarterback but to be fair Marcus Mariota has been perfectly acceptable as a backup but the defence is just running out of pieces and two more players are unavailable on that side of the ball here too which is going to cause Washington big problems.

Betting

Whenever we have one of these international matches, especially in new territory, I’m always drawn to the over because I think the league would rather see some big plays and a relatively high scoring match to draw more people into the sport. As luck would have it we have two sides here who aren’t exactly flying on defence which should assist the point scoring and therefore I’m looking at over 46.5 points as a bet in this one.

The Washington defence has coughed up 154 points in their last four matches and although Dan Quinn is taking over the play calling, he calls an aggressive game but might not have the personnel to do it with. It isn’t too long ago that Miami conceded 31 to a weak Cleveland Browns offense so there is very much a hole in both sides defensively. Add in the profile of the game and a couple of useful offenses and I think we have a match that goes beyond 46.5 points.
