The ATP Tour season ends this week when the leading eight fit players in the campaign heads to Turin to compete in the year ending Nitto ATP World Tour Finals in a week which usually delivers stacks of quality and drama.
Jannik Sinner didn’t really get involved in any of that last year as he romped to the title in front of his home crowd but the other seven players all earned their spot in the field and will be looking to take the trophy off him.

The Format
We have already had the draw for the singles and doubles events which have seen the eight players and teams put into two groups of four for the opening round. That sees each player or pair playing the other three in their group. At the end of that stage the top two in each group move into the semi-finals where the winner of one group plays the runner up of the other one. The two winning semi-finalists meet in the final for the title on the second Sunday of the event. Each singles match is the best of three sets with a tiebreak in the decider while the doubles are the best of three sets with the third set being a match tiebreak.
Bjorn Borg Group
This is the group where the world number two and defending champion Jannik Sinner will look to make a successful defence of his title from. He will be hoping that the courts are slower than usual in this tournament because he is up against three big servers in this section. The former winner Alexander Zverev is the second seed in this group and they are joined by two of the debutants in the event in Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime who will both be out to show that they are not just making up the numbers here.
Jimmy Connors Group
The number one seed Carlos Alcaraz is the highest ranked player in the Jimmy Connors group. He was expected to have his work cut out with the dangerous challenge of Novak Djokovic meant to be in this section as well but the Serb has withdrawn which as left Taylor Fritz as the danger in terms of the world rankings. Alex de Minaur has battled hard all year to finally get the chance to make his debut in the season ending tournament while Lorenzo Musetti was called up as the replacement for Djokovic and he will look to cause some upsets in this group.

Doubles
It isn’t just the singles players who are in the field this week, the leading eight doubles pairs on the year will be in the competition as well and in the Peter Fleming group we have a really tasty looking group. It is headed up by the top seeds in the draw in Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool who will be aiming to win their first ATP World Tour Finals title. Marcel Granollers are the next seeded team in this group while the defending champions Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz will look to keep hold of their crown from this section. The Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori complete this tough looking group.
The John McEnroe group forms the other half of the draw in this tournament with Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten the leading seeds in it. Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic have plenty of experience of this event and they are the second seeds in this section. Joe Salisbury has won this tournament partnering Rajeev Ram in the past and he’ll be looking to get his hands back on the title when he teams up with Neal Skupski for this year while the American duo of Christian Harrison and Evan King will make their debut in the event to complete a very strong doubles field for this season.
Singles Betting
Generally when Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are in the same tournament they tend to meet in the final. I wouldn’t rule that out by any means but there is a real battle for the year end number one and it wouldn’t be the first time that the main two in this event have had their eye on that and taken their attention off the main prize and been caught out. Conditions here are usually fast too which might bring the field more into play even though another Alcaraz vs Sinner final is highly likely.
Were one to slip up in their group they could face off in the semi-final which would open the door to the other half of the draw for an each way punt and my eye is drawn to Felix Auger-Aliassime. He has won seven titles indoors so there is something about the roof over his head which he likes. The faster conditions will do him no harm here and he carries plenty of form into the event with him having recently made the Paris Masters final. It definitely isn’t a bad thing that FAA is in the Sinner group as it means he wouldn’t get him in a semi-final so I think the Canadian is the each way value in this field.
Doubles Betting
I often like a punt on the doubles draw for some interest in that tournament in this event and it should be well worth getting involved again because we have some really good teams on show. Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have been the team who have accrued the most ranking points this term but I think they are worth taking on and I’m going to do that with the experienced pair of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
It could be said that with experience comes age and they are getting no younger but this is a pairing who have played 13 tournaments this season, comfortable the least of the eight teams who have qualified for this event, and they have won six of them including a pair of Grand Slams. Granollers has won this tournament before with Marc Lopez and he and Zeballos made the final here in 2013. When they team up in doubles they tend to go deep and at 6/1 I’ll pay to see how they go here.
