OHL Classic Golf – DFS Fantasy Breakdown

We have another PGA Tour event this week which is the OHL Classic over in Mexico and we also have more excellent DFS fantasy games to get stuck into with our fantasy partners DraftKings. You can win as much as $5,000 this week for just $4 so there is some excellent value to be had.

To win that we need to put together a team of six players to stay inside the salary cap. Here is our advice on who to pick and who not to pick this week. Usually we would use statistics to aid our picks but with it still this early in the season there isn’t too much to go on.

Star Men

This section is for those who cost more than $8,000 and there are plenty of them in what is a competitive field this week.

MAIN PICK – Jim Furyk $10,200

He’s our main betting pick this week and he is our main fantasy pick too. Whichever way I look at this course it just suits Furyk down to the ground and I see nothing different here. I’m expecting him to run up a massive score this week.

PICK – Billy Horschel $9,300

He has been one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour for the last couple of years and eventually he is going to work it out with the putter. It may be that it is this week he does that and if it is he should score nicely out in Mexico.

PICK – Graeme McDowell $9,100

The defending champion fits this golf course nicely and the more the wind blows the better he will like it. Putting is a big thing this week and McDowell is one of the better ones of those so if he can control his ball from tee to green like he has been recently he can have another good week.

PICK – Marc Leishman $8,500

The Australian may have something of a point to prove given that he should really be defending in South Africa this week but can’t. He has a solid all-round game with his short game and irons up there with his strengths and that should fit this course nicely. Expect him to score well here.

PICK – Derek Fathauer $8,300

Fathauer heads to Mexico in good form and he is riding nicely on the putting statistics. He flattered to deceive in Vegas last week but his price is just about respectable enough to have him in our plans even if it is only as second in command to one of the very expensive players.

AVOID – Emiliano Grillo $11,200

Grillo is one of the best ball strikers on the tour but you have to putt well to be successful around here and that is very much the weakness of his game. Time and again he loses strokes to the field with the short stick and if we’re shelling out this sort of cash we don’t want to be losing strokes anywhere.

AVOID – Scott Piercy $9,800

We backed Scott Piercy with our betting plan last week and he annoyed the life out of me eventually throwing away a promising position with a shocking Sunday. At no point did he ever convince with the putter in that tournament and that doesn’t bode well here. He’s easily passed over.

Mid-Range Players

In this section we take a look at the players who cost between $6,600 and $8,000 inclusively. There are a fair few players in this section.

PICK – Jason Bohn $7,600

He might not have been in the best of form since his heart attack but he fits this golf course nicely. He lost in a playoff here last year and has a decent record around that. His record suggests we should be paying a bit more for him so he’s a natural, but potentially popular, selection.

PICK – Cody Gribble $7,400

New on Tour but he’s already a winner and there is no reason why he won’t step up with his achievements and go close again here. We saw with Russell Knox last year that winning for the first time doesn’t mean you can’t defend here. Gribble is pretty cheap given his form.

PICK – Adam Hadwin $6,900

Without ever getting too deep into contention the Canadian has put up scores of 90 and 87 in the last two tournaments and that bodes well for us taking him at a relatively low price. He has made 37 birdies and an eagle in his last two events and on an easier track here those numbers should equal a big score.

PICK – Fabian Gomez $6,600

Gomez is a speaker of the native language which can never be a bad thing but more importantly he is a good ball striker and as a winner on the PGA Tour he is comfortably too low in terms of his price here. May not score bucket loads of points but at the very worst he frees up some cash whole scoring respectably.

AVOID – Ryo Ishikawa $7,400

I took the Japanese man in my betting list last week and he annoyingly found a way to miss the cut when it looked almost impossible. That has put me off here and he is a few quid more expensive than I would be comfortable with too.

AVOID – Robert Garrigus $7,000

Garrigus missed the cut in Vegas last week with an over par score which doesn’t bode well and I’m not convinced this course suits him. He’s another who looks overpriced in comparison to some others so we don’t mind leaving him out of our plans here.

AVOID – Danny Lee $6,700

I like Danny Lee per se but his form is very scratchy and I prefer to go into these sorts of tournaments with those playing well and with their head up and making things happen. That isn’t Lee and recent weeks suggest the output doesn’t reflect the cost.

Bottom End Players

This is for those who cost us $6,500 or less this week and given the size of the field there is a large number in here too.

PICK – Chris Stroud $6,500

We’ve already made a case for him in our betting preview but on his former record here he is worth adding to any line up. At this price we’ll take him making the cut and his past exploits here suggest that’s the least he’ll do.

PICK – Brian Stuard $6,500

Another one with a good record around here and someone who is solid enough from tee to green to be competitive. Again down at this level all we’re looking for really is someone to make the cut and he looks worthy of doing that.

PICK – Chez Reavie $6,400

Banged in a second round 61 to make the cut last week despite a shambles of a first round. Finished the weekend well too so although I’m sure he’ll be popular this week he has a good upside at a tidy price.

AVOID – Boo Weekley $6,400

Three tournaments played for the popular American this season and he’s missed all three cuts and missed them by a distance too in certain cases. In a potentially low scoring week we don’t want to be risking a missed cut anywhere.

AVOID – David Hearn $6,200

Similar to Danny Lee for us here. Things aren’t really happening for Hearn at the minute and we aren’t going to be guessing when he is going to return to form. There are enough players at similar prices who will do a better job for us this week.
