We are halfway through the athletics programme at the Olympic Games and having had some wonderful performances and competitions we are set for plenty more as we approach the end of the week.
Wednesday is another day where the big names come out to play with Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Dafne Schippers and Caster Semenya all out on the track across the two sessions of action.
Gold Medal Events
- Men’s 3,000m Steeplechase
- Women’s Long Jump
- Women’s 200m
- Women’s 100m Hurdles
Other Events
- Men’s Decathlon
- Men’s Hammer
- Men’s 5,000m
- Women’s 800m
- Men’s Javelin
- Men’s 200m
With the exception of the men’s 200m the other events on show on Wednesday are all in their infancy stage so we’ll take a watching brief on those and come back with any potential bets later in the week.
Men’s 3,000m Steeplechase
All eyes will be on this race to see if the Americans can get the better of the Africans. The odds suggest they won’t with Conseslus Kipruto the odds on favourite with the second favourite Ezekiel Kemboi, also of Kenya, being well supported in the betting.
This should be a decent race with a few potential winners in it but in truth this looks like one of those races where the market will either be proved right or the medallists are all at cramped odds so we’ll sit this one out.
Women’s Long Jump
This has the potential to be one of the best competitions of the entire meeting and with the track being fairly quiet in terms of number of events in the evening session we should see plenty of this event on our screens.
Defending champion Brittney Reece is an even money favourite to win while the world champion Tianna Bartoletta has also made it into this final but I’m going to take on the Americans with the jumper from Croatia.
Ivana Spanovic is one of the most consistent jumpers in the world and she comes in here with three Diamond League wins to her name in 2016 including one over Reece in Stockholm recently. She’s yet to jump the magical 7m this year but she has done it in the past. Spanovic was third in the World Championship last year but Shara Proctor never even qualified for this final and Bartoletta overtook her with her final jump having done little prior to that. At 11/4 I think Spanovic is value to dethrone the Americans.
Women’s 200m
We’ve already previewed this event earlier in the week and having taken Dafne Schippers at odds against and nailed the value we’re happy to stay with that. The Dutch athlete is now odds on having looked to be cruising when beating her main rival for gold Elaine Thompson in the semi-final and as long as the former heptathlete handles the occasion she should win the title.
Women’s 100m Hurdles
This is always a race where I feel there can be surprises but then when it is raced the favourite usually dominates it. Brianna Rollins is the favourite this year and it is hard to go against that but at the same time we can’t back her at 1/3 so we’ll let her win and see if she can get close to the world record which her compatriot broke in London recently.
