It is the final day of action in the Olympic football competition on Saturday and what a day it promises to be as Nigeria take on Honduras in the bronze medal match before the big rematch between Germany and Brazil to decide the gold medallists.
Nigeria vs Honduras
This is probably Honduras’ final. Having been drawn against Brazil and finding themselves behind after 20 seconds in the semi-final they knew there was a stronger than normal chance they would be playing for bronze. Nigeria will be disappointed to be in this match but they don’t win many medals away from their obvious events so this would still be momentous enough to be important.
Honduras had been relatively tight defensively going into that semi-final but Brazil blew it apart with pace and skill which quite simply Honduras had no answer to and never looked like being able to contain and Nigeria have the pace and power to exploit them too.
After an absolute walloping you would think Honduras will play tight and cagey here but I expect Nigeria to get through in the end over the course of the 90 minutes and 7/10 on them winning could turn into a gift by the end of the day.
Brazil vs Germany
So here it is. Two years on from their most humiliating day Brazil finally get their chance for revenge inside the Maracana. The last time these two sides met in major competition Germany won 7-1 in the World Cup semi-final and Brazil have been smarting ever since.
The first thing we need to say is there is HUGE pressure on this Brazil side to deliver in this match and how they cope with that pressure could go a long way to deciding the outcome of the battle. Germany don’t have that pressure but as world champions neither do they have the luxury of not performing.
I’m expecting goals here. Both sides have been full of them in the lead up to this final and one thing we do know is Brazil aren’t going to go easy on Germany if they have them on the rack. They want as much revenge as possible but Germany are potent, dangerous on the counter attack and everything Brazil don’t want them to be. This game just screams goals at me.
