Other Events

As well as medals being handed out in that we have more action in the diving, golf, handball and the gymnastics as well as the indoor volleyball and the basketball. It really is a great day of sport.

Team GB Watch

All eyes will be on the women’s hockey gold medal match where Team GB go for glory against the Netherlands but there is also medal hopes in the modern pentathlon with Samantha Murray, the show jumping with Nick Skelton and boxer Joe Joyce who is already guaranteed a bronze medal but will want to secure at least a silver. Tom Daley is also in action in the men’s 10m platform prelims.

Diving

We will definitely have our eyes on the men’s 10m platform but there is no need to get involved in the preliminary stages of the event. We will keep our powder dry hopefully for a bet later in the week.

Football

It is the final of the women’s event on Friday night. We’ve not looked at the competition too much in our previews and with all the shocks and surprises that are happening it is a good job we haven’t. This doesn’t seem like the right time to start our involvement so we’ll sit this one out.

Cycling

It is the final of the BMX events on Friday and despite the demise of the Team GB hopes it is still an event to look at with interest. It was carnage on the bumps on Thursday with crashes galore and don’t be surprised if it is like that on Friday too when the final stages are held.

After all that action on Thursday it is the Australian rider Sam Willoughby who is now the favourite to win the competition with Conor Fields, Tony Nyhaug and Niek Kimmann rated as his main rivals.

Willoughby won all his runs in the quarter final and he did it in excellent times as well so I believe he is the man to beat. His seeding run was the third fastest in the entire field and one of the two faster than him in that round, David Graf, suffered a crash on Thursday so he might not be the threat he could be.

On times Anthony Dean and Connor Fields are real dangers but I’ve been impressed with the way Willoughby has ridden so far and at 7/2 he gets my support for the remainder of this competition.

Hockey

Team GB women have done remarkably well to make it to the final having beaten New Zealand and Australia along the way and now they face the heavyweights of the event in the Netherlands, winners of the last two Olympic Games gold medals.

You could argue taking on a side who have won all seven of their matches so far is silly but Great Britain aren’t used to being in these sort of matches whereas Netherlands are disappointed whenever they aren’t. It isn’t just the Olympics they have dominated. They’ve won the last five World Championships. Dominant doesn’t do the Dutch justice.

With that in mind I’m quite surprised we can get 8/11 on the favourites to win this match. They have an exceptional record over Great Britain through the years and as much as I want GB to win I have to play the statistics and the rankings and side with the Dutch.
