Olympic Games – Other Sports
The Olympic Games in Rio are getting ever nearer to their close and as such a number of events conclude on Thursday. The action is starting to wind down but there should still be some decent sport on throughout the day for us both to enjoy and to bet on.
Gold Medal Events
- Badminton
- Boxing
- Canoeing
- Diving
- Hockey
- Sailing
- Taekwondo
- Triathlon
- Beach Volleyball
- Wrestling
Other Events
As well as all of that we have the indoor sports heading towards the end. Synchronised swimming is one of them while volleyball, handball and water polo all continue. The modern pentathlon begins on Thursday and there is also more action in the equestrian and the women’s golf tournament.
Team GB Watch
Britain have massive medal chances in the triathlon in the form of the Brownlee brothers while Tonia Couch will be hoping to continue the success of the divers when she goes in the 10m platform individual. Britain could also win a bronze medal in the badminton as well.
Diving
We’ve had the preliminary round of the women’s 10m platform and Tonia Couch qualified in fifth place but we’ve seen throughout the diving that the formbook can be thrown out of the window and there isn’t really anyone in the field that we feel comfortable with backing. The market suggests it is a three horse race but which way they will come home is anyone’s guess.
Beach Volleyball
All eyes will be on the male pairing from Brazil to see if they can get the job done. Brazil haven’t had a brilliant time of it indoors in volleyball and their women’s beach players haven’t been as dominant as expected either so there is a lot of pressure on the male beach team to win. Just that pressure alone sends us running for the hills.
Triathlon
The men’s triathlon has been dominated by the Brownlee brothers for quite some time and I expect this one will be as well especially given that their main rival from Spain, Javier Gomez is out of the Games with an injury.
With that in mind the only decision to make is which Brownlee brother will win but all the evidence is that the champion from London, which was Alastair, will defend his title. Even though Alastair has spent plenty of time out injured since London the two times he has races his brother in the World Series this year he has beaten him.
Dangers could still come in the form of the other Spaniard Mario Mola while the strong running Richard Murray can never truly be ruled out but barring a major accident which would be unforeseen we’re firmly in the Alastair Brownlee camp again this year.
Hockey
It is Germany vs Netherlands for the bronze in the men’s hockey while Belgium will go up against Argentina for the golden glory. Belgium and Argentina look pretty well matched but it could be worth a go at the bronze medal match.
Germany finished three points ahead of the Netherlands in the group stages courtesy of beating them 2-1 in the final game and while they were lucky to come past New Zealand in the quarter final the dramatic way they made that comeback from 2-0 down with four minutes left to win with the last stroke of the game says everything about how they want a medal here.
Netherlands came here expecting more than losing in the semi-final and they might be a little flat in this match. Even if they’re not Germany have the beating on them as they’ve shown earlier in the competition so the 13/8 on them winning the match could be a smidgeon too big.
