My Track Cycling betting previews finish with the Men’s Keirin event that will be raced on Tuesday in Rio. The Women’s Sprint and Women’s Omnium competitions also finish on Tuesday. Please see my earlier previews for tips.
Men’s Keirin
The Keirin is a tricky event to win. Looking at the World Championship results since 2010 there is no dominant rider in the mens races. However, there is a dominant rider at the Rio Olympics and his name is Jason Kenny (GBR).
Kenny has won two gold medals here already in the Team Sprint and Individual Sprint. He is favourite to make that 3 in this event with the bookmakers at odds around 2.25-2.50. Kenny has been sensational so far at Rio. He is clearly the fastest rider in a sprint and he will be in the mix for a gold here. Kenny only has one World Championship win in 2013 in this event and finished 6th following an incident this year. The finale of the Keirin can be hectic and there are often crashes. I think this is the only thing that can stop him completing his hat-trick of golds.
Kenny’s team-mate and room-mate Callum Skinner (GBR) has broken through in Rio to the elite level. He has a gold (Team Sprint) and silver (Individual Sprint) so far. If he could pip Kenny to gold they would leave Rio with identical medal hauls. Skinner showed that he was probably the second quickest sprinter in Rio (Denis Dmitriev being in the mix for 2nd). That should translate into the Keirin. Skinner is the real value selection in the betting markets. He can be backed in 8.0-9.0 range (with a bookmaker offering decent EW terms).
Joachim Eilers (GER) won this event at the 2016 World Championships. He was the only rider to win each of the rounds he competed in London. He is ranked as second favourite for this event at 4.33-6.00 and is a real danger to the British challenge.
There has been some uncertainty as to whether Denis Dmitriev (RUS) will participate in the Keirin. He is on the start list but only two bookmakers are offering odds on him. Dmitriev was narrowly beaten by Kenny in the individual sprint semi-finals and he ended up with a Bronze. He has a riding style that suggests ‘fighter’. I’m going to take a small flyer on him with one of those two bookmakers to win the event here at large odds – 21.0.
The other rider with a medal chance is Eddie Dawkins (NZL). Dawkins won silver in the Team Sprint here in Rio so he has form. He also won silver at the World’s in London in this event so is fine with the rough and tumble of this race. Dawkins is 3rd favourite in the betting markets at 7.00-9.00 so the EW is strongly in play.
